Despite his release from prison by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court being a sudden one, Bill Cosby did not waste time dipping his toes into controversial issues, speaking out against the mainstream media.

Bill Cosby, 83, a former actor and comedian used political language in defending Phylicia Rashad, his former television wife, against the mainstream media when she celebrated his release.

In a Twitter post, Rashad wrote: “FINALLY!!!! A terrible wrong is being righted- a miscarriage of justice is corrected!”

The Pennsylvania Supreme Court released Cosby based on a prosecutorial immunity deal made in the past. This stemmed from a $3.4 million settlement that he made with sexual assault accuser Andrea Constand in 2005. Because of her tweet, people seemingly pressured Rashad, who also serves as a Dean at Howard University, to make an apology.

A Washington Post report laid down the details of the pressure Rashad needed to endure to retract her statement supporting Cosby.

The article stated that the actress was under immediate scrutiny. A lot of people pointed out her responsibility as a college dean to hold sexual violence perpetrators accountable. Also, Howard University stated that Rashad’s tweet “lacked sensitivity.”

On Friday, Rashad issued an apology, saying she doesn’t excuse any behavior related to sexual violence. She also said she plans on participating in training that would let her “become a stronger ally.”

“This week, I tweeted a statement that caused so much hurt in so many people — both broadly and inside the Howard community,” the actress wrote. “I offer my most sincere apology.”

Cosby Releases Statement Defending Rashad's Free Speech Rights

In a statement to NPR, Bill Cosby defended the actress’ “right to free speech.”

Through his spokesman, Andrew Wyatt, Cosby said: “Howard University you must support one's Freedom of Speech (Ms. Rashad), which is taught or suppose to be taught every day at that renowned law school, which resides on your campus.”

“This mainstream media has become the Insurrectionists, who stormed the Capitol,” the former actor also said. “Those same Media Insurrectionists are trying to demolish the Constitution of these United State of America on this Independence Day.”

“WE THE PEOPLE STAND IN SUPPORT OF MS. PHYLICIA RASHAD,” he then concluded.
