BLM Says Criticism of Patrisse Khan-Cullors Is a Terror Tactic by White Supremacists
On Tuesday, Black Lives Matter said that the criticism aimed at co-founder Patrisse Khan-Cullors comes as the result of a “right-wing offensive” that, they claim, serves as the continuation of a “tradition of terror” made by “white supremacists.”
Last week, controversy started surrounding Khan-Cullors when reports of her latest real estate purchase surfaced via the media. The BLM co-founder, according to these reports, bought a home in Topanga Canyon, California, worth $1.4 million.
According to the New York Post, Khan-Cullors has so far purchased four houses across the country in the past five years. Three of them are in California while the other is in Georgia. According to the news outlet, Khan-Cullors also considered buying a home in the Bahamas. A report said she went looking for property in an area where celebrities allegedly own property.
This piece of news triggered a new surge in scrutiny focused on the finances of Black Lives Matter. The said organization raised more than $90 million last year.
BLM on the Khan-Cullors Controversy
The Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation released a statement regarding the matter. According to this, Khan-Cullors serves in the organization as a “volunteer” and therefore doesn’t receive a salary from her role. The organization said she only earned $120,000 via her work in the organization for “serving as a spokesperson” as well as her duties in “engaging in political education work”
The statement added that Khan-Cullors “did not receive any compensation after 2019.”
Additionally, BLM’s statement mentioned that it did not use organizational resources just to buy personal property. It also dismissed criticisms aimed at Khan-Cullors and said they were only a form of racist terrorism that aimed to silence her.
Interestingly, many prominent critics who slammed Khan-Cullors in the past week are not white.
For one, the leader of Black Lives Matter Greater New York City, Hawk Newsome, voiced out that an “independent investigation” into BLM and its finances should happen. He added that black firms and black accountants should find out where BLM’s money is going.
Apart from Newsome, black journalist Jason Whitlock also criticized Khan-Cullors. Twitter even allegedly suspended him for doing so.
On Friday, Whitlock mocked Khan-Cullors on Twitter, saying “She’s with her people,” implying the irony of Khan-Cullors buying a $1.4-million home in an area that has “a black population of 1.4 percent.”
