Jamie Spears, father of American pop icon Britney Spears, said in a filing that he agrees to step down as his daughter’s conservator. Once this becomes official, the elder Spears will end his 13-year management of Britney’s career and finances.
Britney Spears Claims Abusive Relationship
In a court filing submitted Thursday, Jamie Spears said he is willing to step down from his conservator position but wants an orderly transition. This includes the resolution of pending matters already sent to the courts.
“Mr. Spears is willing to step down when the time is right, but the transition needs to be orderly and includes a resolution of matters pending before the Court,” the filing said.
For years, the pop singer asked the courts to remove his father from the conservatorship, saying that it wasn’t in her best interest. Last June, Britney Spears shared details when she appeared before the court, she described the court-appointed arrangement as abusive.
In addition, she claimed the conservatorship forced her to work 70 hours a week, Plus, they didn’t allow her to leave her house. When she refused to resume her Las Vegas residency, her father forced her to take strong medication.
Jamie Spears Says He’s ‘Her Best Choice’
However, Jamie Spears’ filing insisted that he is his daughter’s best hope. “There is no doubt that the Conservatorship saved Ms. Spears from disaster, supported her when she needed it the most, protected her and her reputation from harm, and facilitated the restoration of her career,” the filing said.
The elder Spears’ attorneys also denied that he mistreated his daughter. Instead, they insisted he remains the best choice to oversee the conservatorship.
The only reason Birney Spears’ father agreed to step down was to avoid further attacks on his person. “Nevertheless, even as Mr. Spears is the unremitting target of unjustified attacks, he does not believe that a public battle with his daughter over his continuing service as her conservator would be in her best interests,” the filing added.
Britney Spears and Mother Welcomed The Decision
Meanwhile, Britney Spear’s attorney, Mathew Rosengart, welcomes Jamie’s decision to step down. “We are pleased that Mr. Spears and his lawyer have today conceded in a filing that he must be removed. It is vindication for Britney.
We are disappointed, however, by their ongoing shameful and reprehensible attacks on Ms. Spears and others,” he added.
At the same time, Gladstone Jones, a lawyer for Britney’s mom Lynn Spears, also lauded the news. “Lynne Spears, Britney’s mother, is pleased Jamie has agreed to step down.
Lynne entered into this conservatorship to protect her daughter almost 3 years ago. She has accomplished what she set out to do,” Jone said.
Estate Went From Being In Debt To a Value Of $60 Million
The decision to step down is the latest in a series of public feuds between Britney Spears and her father. She said she will put her music career on hold while her father is actively controlling her interests.
Since 2008, Jamie assumed control of his daughter’s estate. He argued that under his conservatorship, the estate went from being in debt to now having a value of more than $60 million.
