The House of Commons in Canada passed a motion that calls for labeling the Proud Boys group as a terrorist organization.

The lower chamber passed the legislation unanimously on Monday.

The motion calls for the Canadian government to use all of the tools under its belt “to address the proliferation of white supremacists and hate groups starting with the immediately designating the Proud Boys as a terrorist entity,” as per Global News.

Member of Parliament Jagmeet Singh introduced the said motion. He also serves as the head of Canada’s Democratic Party (NPD). The said party has pushed for this designation for weeks.

The leadership in Ottawa has to make the final decision on the matter, so now, the legislation awaits its consideration.

On Twitter, Singh urged Canadia Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to support the measure. Singh also told his followers to put pressure on the leadership to accept the motion.

Proud Boys Group Involved in Violent Riots

The Proud Boys is known to be a far-right group. They have been criticized in recent years due to their connection to violent demonstrations in the US. Some of these demonstrations come in support of former US President Donald Trump.

According to the group, they are “a pro-Western fraternal organization for men who refuse to apologize for creating the modern world; aka Western Chauvinists.”

Washington D.C. police have arrested Enrique Tarrio, a Proud Boys leader, and have charged him with destruction of property. He was arrested for being involved in pro-Trump protests that happened in D.C. last month.

When authorities arrested him, they found two high-capacity firearm magazines in his possession. This resulted in the police also charging him with the possession of a high-capacity feeding device.

Authorities have also arrested members of the Proud Boys group with charges related to the violent Capitol siege last Jan. 6.
