DHS, SSA Move to Cancel Social Security Numbers of Migrants to Force Them to Deport Themselves

The Trump administration is taking a new, aggressive step in its immigration crackdown: cancel Social Security numbers of thousands of migrants living in the United States. The Social Security Administration (SSA) has reportedly added over 6,000 predominantly Latino migrants to its Death Master File. This database is originally created to track deceased individuals and prevent improper benefit claims. However, critics say this move to include living migrants to the deceased list forces them to leave the country.

The effort is reportedly led by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and approved by SSA officials under pressure from the White House. By adding migrants to the list of the dead, the administration blocks them from receiving essential government services, including Medicaid, unemployment insurance, and basic banking functions.

A Financial Lockout Targeting Migrants

The migrants affected by the cancel Social Security strategy are people who previously held temporary legal status under programs established during President Biden’s term. Those programs allowed migrants from countries like Venezuela, Cuba, and Nicaragua to enter legally if they passed security checks and had sponsors. Now, with the revocation of their legal status, these individuals face what some advocates call “financial death.” Without valid Social Security numbers, migrants cannot access health care, receive government benefits, or even work legally. They may even lose access to their bank accounts and housing.

Not everybody agrees with the DHS and SSA’s decision. Critics argue that this maneuver weaponizes government systems against vulnerable populations. Martin O’Malley, former commissioner of the SSA, called the tactic “financial murder” in an interview. “This is not how immigration enforcement was ever supposed to work,” O’Malley said. “We’re seeing government tools built to serve citizens being used to destroy lives.”

Will This Force Migrants to Leave?

Supporters of the cancel Social Security approach believe it will be effective in discouraging illegal immigration. White House officials say the strategy aligns with President Trump’s promise of mass deportations. By removing financial incentives, they argue, undocumented migrants will be left with no choice but to leave voluntarily. A White House statement explained the logic clearly: “President Trump promised mass deportations. By removing the monetary incentive for illegal aliens to stay, we encourage them to self-deport.”

Opponents of the move, however, warn that this approach could set a dangerous precedent. They argue that the SSA’s Death Master File was never intended for immigration enforcement. There are also concerns that U.S. citizens could be mistakenly added to the list, causing chaos in their financial lives. Groups like Democracy Forward are preparing legal challenges, arguing that this policy violates federal privacy laws. Others fear that using government data to enforce immigration policy could escalate into broader civil rights violations.

A New Era of Immigration Crackdowns

This move comes amid broader efforts by the Trump administration to limit legal pathways into the U.S. and ramp up deportations. Programs allowing migrants to enter legally under certain conditions are being rolled back or canceled.

According to reports, the SSA has even signed agreements to share personal address data with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which gives federal authorities more tools to locate and deport undocumented individuals.

As the administration continues to cancel Social Security numbers of migrants, the coming months may see more legal battles and public debate over immigration enforcement tactics. The question remains: Will this hardline approach succeed in its goal of mass self-deportations, or will it lead to a backlash over its human cost?
