May 31st has become Chicago’s deadliest recorded day in 60 years – having 18 murders.

Chicago reached this “dubious milestone” on a day the city experienced “another round of protests and looting following the Memorial Day death of George Floyd in police custody in Minneapolis,” as reported by Fox News.

The University of Chicago Crime Lab has tallied 18 deaths. This makes May 31, 2020 the single-most violent day in 60 years.

“The lab’s data doesn’t go back further than 1961,” the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

Data maintained by the Chicago Sun-Times says that 25 people were killed in the city. Meanwhile, another 85 wounded by gunfire. This data was from 7 p.m. Friday, May 29, through 11 p.m. Sunday, May 31.

“We’ve never seen anything like it, at all,” said the crime lab’s senior research director, Max Kapustin. “I don’t even know how to put it into context. It’s beyond anything that we’ve ever seen before.”

The city’s next most violent day was August 4, 1991, with 13 recorded murders.

“The level of activity experienced over the last week has been unprecedented and the Department is actively investigating multiple incidents across the city and working to determine the motives in these cases,” Chicago Police spokesman Thomas Ahern told Chicago Sun-Times.

According to him, the department was “actively working to seek justice for all the residents impacted, especially those who have been killed or injured by these senseless acts of violence.”
