House GOP Wants To Hold China Accountable For Pandemic

House Republicans called on the Biden administration to hold China accountable for the coronavirus pandemic. They want the Chinese government to acknowledge their part in the origin of the virus. COVID-19 devastated the world’s economy for the previous one and a half years.

Eight Proposals To Make China Accountable

The House GOP leadership outlined eight proposals to crack down on China. This includes proposals for new sanctions to make the country go on notice.

It also includes visa restrictions for Chinese officials who covered up information. “We need to impose sanctions so they feel the pain of what they have done,” House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) said Wednesday during a news conference.

Joining McCarthy in calling out China were GOP Whip Steve Scalise, Republican Conference Chair Elise Stefanik, and others.   They argued that the Chinese Communist Party must pay for damages caused by the pandemic. This includes the loss of more than 600,000 American lives.

The World Deserves To Know The Truth

As the virus's origin remains unclear, President Joe Biden requested an investigation last month. This includes looking into the possibility that the original strain escaped from a Wuhan lab.

Texas Representative Michael McCaul, the top GOP on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, agrees that the truth must come out. “The world deserves to know the truth. We need to find out why because we don't want this to happen again,” he said.

Democrats Accuse Republicans Of ‘Rewriting History’

However, Democrats insisted that Republicans are trying to rewrite history. In addition, they accused former President Donald Trump and McCarthy of inaction during the last year of the pandemic.

“As Trump gave China a pass on its coronavirus mismanagement, and even praised them for their ‘efforts and transparency,’ the House GOP Leader was silent,” Democratic National Committee spokesperson Adonna Biel said in a statement.

“Americans have President Biden and Democrats to thank for leading us through this pandemic, delivering hundreds of millions of vaccinations, and rebuilding the economy, and they’ll see right through the staggering hypocrisy by Kevin McCarthy and the GOP as they try to rewrite history,” she added.

Other Measures To Make China Accountable

Meanwhile, GOP lawmakers proposed additional measures as part of their China framework. This includes declassifying intelligence related to the origins of coronavirus and banning so-called “gain of function” research in China.

Gain-of-function (GOF) research involves experimenting on viruses and other pathogens to increase their effectiveness and their speed of transmission. Scientists use this to learn more about how extensive the effect of a virus is and how fast it spread.

The GOP also wants to authorize American families who lost loved ones to coronavirus to sue China for damages. In addition, a proposal to move the 2022 Winter Olympics from Beijing is also part of the framework.

Democrats Not Doing Enough

House Republicans called out the majority Democrats for not doing enough to hold China accountable for the origin of COVID-19. As a result, Republicans are planning to hold their own GOP forum on June 29 and get witness testimonies on the subject.
