On Friday, Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas was hospitalized with “flu-like symptoms.” According to a statement from the court, however, Thomas is expected to be released soon.

Thomas, who is 73 years old, was admitted to Sibley Memorial Hospital in D.C., as per the court’s statement. “He underwent tests, was diagnosed with an infection and is being treated with intravenous antibiotics. His symptoms are abating, he is resting comfortably, and he expects to be released from the hospital in a day or two.”

A spokesperson for the Supreme Court also said that the justice’s illness “is not COVID related.”

“The Justice does not have COVID,” the spokesperson mentioned.

Similar to the other eight SCOTUS justices, Thomas is fully vaccinated against COVID-19. He also has received booster doses.

While the judge will miss several oral arguments, the Supreme Court said that he will take part in cases in which he cannot be physically present via briefs, transcripts, and audio recordings. His absence will likely not top the balance of the court.
