CNN Ratings Crumble without Massive Trump Stories
Now that they can't make stories slamming former US President Donald Trump, as he is not in the White House anymore, CNN has seen a drastic loss in viewership and drop in ratings.
CNN is known to have waged a propaganda war against former President Trump during his four years in office. It seems during that time, their mission was to push him out of the White House. They also provided the anti-Trump population fuel in the form of conspiracies and fake news. Now that he’s gone, it seems the news network is struggling.
Calling their ratings “horrific” today can be considered an understatement. It already lost more than 50% of its viewership since Trump left office. As per a Fox News report, CNN had an average of 2.2 million viewers in the first three weeks of 2021. However, since Biden became president, their average number of viewers dropped to 1 million. This is a drop in viewership by 54%.
CNN’s viewership with the 25-54 demographic saw a worse decline as it dropped by 60%.
Apart From Trump Stories, CNN Also Loses Airport Network
According to the Fox News reports, CNN had 617,000 viewers in this demographic from Dec. 28, 2020, until Inauguration day. Now, the average number of viewers in the said demographic is 244,000.
Adding to these woes is CNN’s decision to stop broadcasting Airport Network. According to the network’s CEO, Jeff Zucker, in January, Airport Network will no longer be broadcasted because of the steep decline in travel caused by the COVID-19 outbreak.
A steep decline in air travel because of the pandemic is definitely a part of the reason. However, their loss of negative coverage for Trump proves to be a major factor in this decision.
It’s also worth mentioning that prior to Trump winning in 2016, the ratings of the news network were already dropping fast.
Currently, however, CNN might see a temporary reprieve, particularly if the jury in the Derek Chauvin trial will hand down the “wrong verdict” in the case.
