On Tuesday, network giant CNN suspended its top news anchor, Chris Cuomo. They are putting Cuomo on indefinite suspension following his role in helping his brother, former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo. The governor resigned his post over sexual harassment allegations.
CNN Suspends Chris Cuomo Over New Court Documents Suggesting Greater Involvement
In a statement, CNN announced the indefinite suspension of anchor Chris Cuomo. The decision followed the recent of new court documents that involved the CNN host.
“These documents point to a greater level of involvement in his brother’s efforts than we previously knew. As a result, we have suspended Chris indefinitely, pending further evaluation,” CNN said.
Last August, Cuomo’s brother Andrew, the erstwhile governor of New York, stepped down from his position after getting multiple accusations of sexual misconduct.
While the elder Cuomo stepped down, he denied any wrongdoing. However, a New York court received a criminal complaint charging Andrew Cuomo with a misdemeanor sex offense on October 29.
Chris Cuomo Admitted to Advising His Brother
Cuomo is the host of CNN’s most-watched primetime news show. He admitted earlier in May that he breached network rules.
Against network restrictions, Chris Cuomo advised his brother on how to handle the sexual allegations. He did so using a public relations perspective. The younger Cuomo also pledged not to report Andrew’s case on air.
The network said on Tuesday that they understood Chris Cuomo at the time. CNN said it “appreciated the unique position he was in and understood his need to put family first and job second”.
However, the release of the new documents raised serious concerns. Documents released by New York Attorney General Letitia James showed a deeper involvement.
It showed that Chris Cuomo used his own sources in the media to find out information about the case. He also tried to get information from his sources about the women who filed complaints against his brother.
Cable News Shockwave
The younger Cuomo’s 9 pm program remains a highly rated show and one of CNN’s top raters. He hoped to remain on the air for the rest of the year despite the heavy accusations against his governor brother.
Tuesday's announcement on Chris Cuomo’s suspension dashed hope for a return to his regularly scheduled broadcast.
Instead, the new documents released by the New York AG’s office showed that Chris involved himself far more than what CNN can accept.
A CNN spokesperson said that the new evidence is an eye-opener for the network. “The New York Attorney General's office released transcripts and exhibits Monday that shed new light on Chris Cuomo's involvement in his brother's defense.
The documents, which we were not privy to before their public release, raise serious questions.” the spokesman said.
More Than CNN Previously Knew
“When Chris admitted to us that he had offered advice to his brother's staff, he broke our rules and we acknowledged that publicly,” the spokesperson continued. “But we also appreciated the unique position he was in and understood his need to put family first and job second.”
“However, these documents point to a greater level of involvement in his brother's efforts than we previously knew,” the spokesperson added. “As a result, we have suspended Chris indefinitely, pending further evaluation.”
