A bit of a concern for both pro-gun advocates and the gun-grabbers is whether or not children should have access to guns. After all, we constantly hear about the little boy or girl who has accidentally taken the life from another, because they simply did not know any better. The last thing any of us wants, is to hear of a child shooting someone, or getting shot. But, what if they did know better?

Obviously, there is a greater chance of a family who owns firearms teaching its children about them than a family without. Furthermore, some parents would never want their kid to have access to, or even learn anything about, guns. But, we’ve all seen that those children who know about guns and have been taught firearms safety from an early age can actually be safer with them because of the greater understanding they have for them.

Well, one middle school in Colorado recently decided that it would be a good idea for their students to not only know about guns, but also how to handle them safely. So, they brought in Project Appleseed to help teach the children about guns, and, on the last day, to actually take a turn in shooting them.

In fact, the program coordinator, Jim Heath said: “We’re teaching them about the firearms so they are familiar with them, they can be safe with them.”

And, let’s face it: Familiarity is key whenever learning something new.

Unfortunately, however, the video does a poor job of showing any of the firearms safety skills that were learned during this multi-day event. In fact, many proficient gun owners will likely cringe during a few parts when they watch it. Remember, this video is taken from liberal media. Here it is:

Still, it’s nice to know that there are some people out there willing to teach kids firearms safety. Perhaps if more children knew the dangers associated with putting your finger on the trigger, less of them would do it.

Of course, a program like this never takes the place of a parent’s teaching about guns and gun safety, but for those kids who will never hear any gun-positive words come out of their parent’s mouths, this is, by far, a huge step in the right direction.

What do you think about this? Would you ever want a program like Project Appleseed to come to your child’s school to teach about firearms safety? Let us know in the comments below.

I think that if children were taught about gun safety there would not be any accidental shootings involving children.

  • Scott says:

I think it’s a good idea to teach everyone about gun safety.

  • Janet Julien says:

Guns are scary, yes, but that is to the person that doesn’t understand them and the answer to that fear is Knowledge. Knowledge is knowing how they work, how to take care of them, what they can and can’t do and what repercussions come from using one in an unapproved manner. This basic lesson should be taught early on so that everyone will know what to do when encountering a situation involving a firearm.

  • Gail says:

Teaching children at a young age should be teaching safety and responsibilities proper use of. A firearm. The hunter safety classes that most states give are a perfect way to get started.

  • Jan says:

I think that the earlier kids learn, the better.
It teaches them a very important lesson about guns, both in safety as well as courses in learning the responsibility of how to use a gun.

  • Brian McKeown says:

“IGNORANCE” is the most dangerous single thing regarding firearms. A good SAFETY
INSTRUCTION PROGRAM would save more children’s lives than any other single thing that could be done…IF the parent(s) were also compelled to attend WITH the children so everyone was on the same page.

When a person learns how to safely use a gun or any tool they are no longer afraid of it, can use it with confidence, and skill. Wherever guns are legal and people can openly carry them, crime goes down. You have just leveled the playing field.
The main reason for owning a gun is the 2nd Amendment gives everyone the right to own a gun for your personal defense. Please read the Second Amendment, it is very clear.

  • Name says:

Because most people that fear guns know nothing about them, have never shot one or even touched one. Learning the facts about guns at an early age could help reduce the fear and objections to guns.

  • Tamie says:

Why? As a 1979 graduate the violence in this country compared to 1979 has grown tremendously. Same as the number of guns, different types of guns has grown.
In 1979 we had No reason to be felt not safe in our schools. Nothing like today.
The USA needs to grow with the years. Needs to educate as many Americans as possible.
In Which is no better place to begin than our schools and colleges. Some people may frown on this. Although can not expect all parents to teach their children about guns nor do so.im a safe way. That is why we have and need our schools. I have witnessed over the years so many classes/courses stripped from schools due to funding in my eyes is unacceptable. These children are the USA next generations, next leaders, but our country keeps stripping their growth because of funding? Seriously?
Parents can’t do it all and sadly some parents do no teaching. Leaving my answer to be Yes And I have Faith the schools will teach Guns, guns safety, different types, how to protect ourselves. Americans have this right. Stop taking away our Right to Learn. Thank you.

Being informed and aware of guns is no different than schools informing children of sex…knowledge to make good decisions!

  • Jimmy McClung says:

Everyone needs to know about gun safety.

  • NICK HINTON says:

Firearms training SHOULD be taught in every school. It is a healthy sport, gets kids off the sofa, off the computer and actually teach something they will retain for a lifetime. Simply saying “guns are bad” doesn’t teach them of the danger of mishandling a weapon or the damage it CAN cause. Show children early on that they have only 1 life, life isn’t like a video game, and they need to know the dangers AND joy of firearms. Criminals don’t care about “gun-free zones”, but signs saying “we have trained and armed personnel to protect our children” makes them think twice about attacking a “not soft” target.

  • Russell says:

It is my experience that knowledge and practice create a much safer atmosphere for all items that can be mishandled. Everyone should know the gun safe rules of never point a gun at anything you don’t want to kill. Always keep the muzzle up in a safe direction. Never assume that a guns is unloaded until you personally check the chamber. Never threaten to kill unless it is to save your life or someone else. Never fire a warning shot. If you intend to shoot, shoot to kill. Do not count on disabling a suspect that has the ability to take your life. Keep weapons unloaded when stored and out of sight.

  • Anse says:

    Its my right.

  • Steve says:

Teaching kids the SAFEWAY to handle weapons Begins at Home. But EVERY KID needs to be Taught!!!

  • gino capo says:

Teach them while they are willing & able to learn, before they are forced to learn from the streets.

    Firearm education = Gun safety

  • James Munroe says:

One of the best sources of information and supplies is the NRA and I have not seen any mention of them on here. they have instructors all over the country that will train young people for nothing and used to teach in schools for nothing. I myself have been certified many years back in rifle , pistol , shot gun, hunter safety ,and Junior rifle. have also shot compitition pistol for 35 years. James Munroe

  • Jesse E Cranford Jr says:

I have had guns from the time I was 12 years old. My Dad taught me how to hunt meat for us to eat. So I think all children old enough to understand how to use a firearm is important.

  • David Bray says:

Guns don’t kill people… people kill people.

There are many ways to kill people. Guns are only one tool.

  • Harry stewart says:

My father started me shooting guns when I was 9 years old.How to handle a gun. Always have your finger off the trigger at all times till it was time to fire. Never never pick up a gun in out home or some where else. Before we started home.WE check every gun to make sure they all were unloaded.

  • Maray says:

People fear what they do not know about or do not understand. If taught at a young age the importance of knowing how and what a gun is used for and to be taught to respect guns they are ahead of the game. Just as they are taught respect, maners and responsibility.

  • Harold Wind says:

I feel if a kid is taught at the right age, and is in the right mind It is a good thing.

  • Drawer22 says:

For my kids, firearms education started at age 4, with disassembly, reassembly, and a running narrative about safety, interspersed with proper nomenclature, ammunition recognition, and various “how to” demonstrations at the diningroom table. They were then introduced to a BB gun, learning to shoot it in the garage, with a safe backdrop. Their education has continued since then, inclusive of American History and the role of our Constitution of the United States of America and its Amendments, as well as the politics of firearms. Today, they are educated patriots, respectful of our rights as Americans and critical of those who would infringe on those rights.

Had I left it up to the school system available in the Soviet Socialist DemonKKKraptik People’s Republik of Kalifornikatistan (KA), about the only things they could have learned would be anti-firearm rhetoric and the value of totalitarian Marxism. So glad I was able to head off Kalifornikatistani propaganda and nip it in the bud!
