An avalanche swept away a group of French students skiing in the Alps on Wednesday, police said, killing at least one person and seriously injuring at least three.

The National Gendarmerie said a massive rescue operation was launched after the group of 11 was hit by the avalanche at the Deux Alpes ski resort near Grenoble shortly before 4 p.m. local time (10 a.m. ET).

Rescuers have located five of the skiiers — including one fatality — and six people remain missing, police added. Further details were not immediately available.
