DeSantis Signs Bill Banning Credit Cards From the Tracking of Gun Sales
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) signed legislation on Friday prohibiting credit card firms from tracking gun transactions in the state.
His office made the following notice on the Florida Governor's home page: “Today, Governor Ron DeSantis signed Senate Bill (SB) 7054 and SB 214 to protect the personal finances of Floridians from government overreach and woke corporate monitoring.”
The post noted, “SB 214 prohibits credit card companies from using firearm-specific Merchant Category Codes and institutes a fine for violations of Florida’s consumer protections against gun owner registries.”
Breitbart News reported on August 28, 2022, that Gabrielle Giffords' gun control group, Giffords, was encouraging major credit firms to identify gun and ammo sales using the new code. Breitbart News reported on August 30 that Democrat New York politicians were pressing major credit card firms to design and deploy a new firearms-specific code that would effectively detect gun sales in the state and throughout the country.
Breitbart News reported in early September 2022 that Visa had bowed to pressure from Democrats and gun control organizations and agreed to implement a new merchant code to track handgun sales. Several credit card companies followed suit.
According to Breitbart News, Discover will begin tracking gun sales in April 2023. But, the public outrage was so strong that all credit card firms abandoned the proposal.
Democrats, on the other hand, reacted by attempting to persuade the DOJ to compel the corporations to install the tracking plan. If the cards are implemented, DeSantis would battle to ensure that gun transactions in Florida are not included in the tracking process.
Larry Keane, general counsel and senior vice president of the National Shooting Sports Foundation, remarked on DeSantis' efforts, stating, “Governor DeSantis is standing up against a ‘woke’ initiative borne from the efforts of antigun Wall Street banks and their gun control allies in the media to use lawful private transactions as a means to usher in gun control.”
“No law-abiding American should be subjected to having their name and financial data being added to a government-accessible watchlist simply for exercising their Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms, ” Keane added. “Governor DeSantis is ensuring that Floridians won’t be held captive by the radical ‘woke’ antigun agenda that seeks to weaponize credit cards in gun owners’ wallets against them.”
