Discover Credit Card to Start Monitoring Gun Purchases in April

Discover will be the first credit card company to track gun transactions made by its cardholders starting in April 2023.

On September 11, 2022, Breitbart News reported that Visa had given in to pressure from pro-gun control organizations and New York Democrats and had agreed to identify transactions of guns and ammunition using a new sales classification system. According to the Associated Press, Mastercard and other significant credit cards have also agreed to alert gun sales.

The Independent Journal Review (IJR) published a story on March 2, 2023, stating that Discover will be the first credit card firm to track gun sales since the corporation will start doing so in April.

IJR explained, “Anyone using a Discover card to make a purchase in a gun store will have that purchase tracked, beginning in April.”

Discover cards are used by more than 55 million people, so just one business has a lot of information about gun transactions.

Discover Financial Services was ahead of Visa and Mastercard in February 2023, according to Reuters, which also noted that Discover would “allow its network to track purchases at gun retailers come April, making it the first among its peers to publicly give a date for moving ahead with the initiative, which is aimed at helping authorities probe gun-related crimes.”

Discover told Reuters, “We remain focused on continuing to protect and support lawful purchases on our network while protecting the privacy of cardholders.”

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) adopted the code for tracking gun purchases in September 2022, and an ISO spokesman stated, “The decision to use the new merchant category code is eventually left up to the users in the industry.”
