On Wednesday, Facebook has confirmed that it is testing a new feature called Neighborhoods, which is similar to Nextdoor.

Nextdoor is an online network that “connects neighbors to each other — and to everything nearby: Local businesses, services, news updates, recommendations and stuff for sale from the people down the block,” as described by its website.

“More than ever, people are using Facebook to participate in their local communities,” a Facebook spokesperson said in a statement. “To help make it easier to do this, we are rolling out a limited test of Neighborhoods,” the spokesperson added. The representative described it as “a dedicated space within Facebook for people to connect with their neighbors.”

Facebook is testing the feature in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, before rolling it out to more audiences.

According to TechCrunch, the feature appears in the menu of the main Facebook app. It was “first seen widely via a post on Twitter from social media strategy guy Matt Navarra, who in turn had been tipped off by a social media strategist from Calgary, Leon Grigg from Grigg Digital.”

“Through Neighborhoods, Facebook is doubling down on one of the most popular ways that the social network is already being used — and by an increasing number of people, one of the only ways that it’s being used these days — via Groups, which bypass your own social graph and connect you with other kinds of communities,” reported TechCrunch.
