Fauci on COVID-19 Protection: “If You Have Goggles or an Eye Shield, You Should Use It”

This week, Dr. Anthony Fauci has said that wearing goggles or an eye shield along with a face mask would better protect us against the coronavirus.

“Theoretically you should protect all of the mucosal surfaces [eyes, nose, mouth], so if you have goggles or an eye shield, you should use it,” he said on Wednesday in an interview with ABC News.

Fauci was asked if we are going to reach the point where eye protection is recommended. Regarding this, he responded, “It might, if you really want perfect protection of the mucosal surfaces.”

“You have mucosa in the nose, mucosa in the mouth, but you also have mucosa in the eye,” he continued. “Theoretically, you should protect all the mucosal surfaces. So, if you have goggles or an eye shield you should use it.”

He added that goggles and eye or face shields are “not universally recommended” right now, “but if you really want to be complete, you should probably use it if you can.”

Face Coverings as Protection

Currently, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention already recommends wearing a face mask that covers the nose and mouth in public. However, the virus can also enter through the eyes, Fox News explained.

Fauci added that one of the reasons eye protection has not been recommended yet is “it’s so easy for people to just make a cloth mask.”

Fauci discussed the oncoming flu season as well. “It is inevitable that we're going to have some degree of flu,” he said. “I'm hoping that the wearing of masks and other coverings are going to not only protect us against COVID-19, but also help protect us against influenza.”

“Go out there and get your flu shot when the flu vaccine becomes available,” he added.
