The coronavirus outbreak is likely to become a recurring problem if it does not go under control worldwide. This is according to Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

Fox News reported that Fauci agreed the coming week will be challenging. The report mentioned that the number of deaths is expected to go up at a “shocking” rate. He, however, also acknowledged that social distancing can aid in flattening the curve.

“Unless we get this globally under control there’s a very good chance that it will assume a seasonal nature,” Fauci told CBS.

“Even though you're getting really improvement in that the number of new cases are starting to flatten, the deaths will lag by one or two weeks or more, so we need to be prepared that even though it's clear that mitigation is working, we're still going to see that tail-off of deaths,” Fauci told CBS’s “Face the Nation.” “So the first thing we want to look for is to see on a daily basis are the number of new cases starting to stabilize?”

He added that the number of new cases has begun to go under control in Italy and “hopefully” New York will follow.

“We haven't yet reached that peak,” he started. “When you do, you'll start to see a bit of a flattening and come down,” he added. “Where we are right now is really approaching that apex, and that's why what [Governor Andrew Cuomo] and what we're saying is that this next week is going to look bad because we're still not yet at that apex.”

According to Fox News, Fauci said that people must prepare for a resurgence next year. This is why “officials fighting the pandemic are pushing for a vaccine and clinical trials for therapeutic interventions,” he said. He also added that they do this “so ‘we will have interventions that we did not have’ when this started.”

“On the one hand, things are going to get bad and we need to be prepared for that. It’s going to be shocking to some,” he said. “But that’s what’s going to happen before it turns around,” he continued. “So just buckle down, continue to mitigate, continue do the physical separation because we got to get through this week that’s coming up because it is going to be a bad week,” he went on to say.
