Florida Passes Bill Banning Male Athletes From Women’s Sports
On Wednesday, the Florida House approved a measure that would ban biological males from taking part in women’s sports.
HB 1475 would require public schools and colleges to base participation according to biological sex instead of gender identity.
The said bill would also require schools and institutions to request specific health exams, consent forms and other statements from the healthcare provider of the students to verify a participant’s biological sex given specific instances.
As per the bill, it aims to “maintain opportunities” for women athletes to show off “their skill, strength, and athletic abilities.”
It is also trying to “promote sex equality” by only allowing “separate sex-specific sports and teams.”
The House approved the said bill mostly on party lines. All Republican state lawmakers and one Democrat all voted in favor of it.
State Rep. Jenna Persons-Mulicka, who was once an athlete and coach, said passing the bill is about giving women the equal opportunity to succeed.
On the other hand, Democrat Rep. Anna Eskamani noted that the Florida measure is about women’s sports, not about discrimination and stepping over LGBTQ rights.
