GOP Senator to Challenge Electoral College Results

Vote for House Speaker Fails for the Fifth Time

The Republican Senator Josh Hawley says he will challenge the Electoral College results during the Senate’s counting session on Jan. 6. This will force Congress to vote on overturning Joe Biden's win.

“I cannot vote to certify the electoral college results on January 6 without raising the fact that some states, particularly Pennsylvania, failed to follow their own state election laws,” Hawley said in a statement on Wednesday.

“And I cannot vote to certify without pointing out the unprecedented effort of mega-corporations, including Facebook and Twitter, to interfere in this election, in support of Joe Biden. At the very least, Congress should investigate allegations of voter fraud and adopt measures to secure the integrity of our elections. But Congress has so far failed to act,” he added.

Efforts to Overturn Electoral College Results

This decision by Hawley comes after a group of House Republicans vowed to overturn the Electoral College results. The group, led by Mo Brooks, aims to do so next Wednesday.

In order to force a debate and a vote on their objection to a state's results, House members need the support of a senator. This is something they didn't have before Hawley's announcement.

On Tuesday, US President Donald Trump lambasted the “weak and tired” Republican leadership and called on his own party not to allow Democrats to “steal” the 2020 presidential election.

He also repeated allegations of election fraud in Pennsylvania and other swing states in tweets tagged by Twitter as containing “disputed” claims.

Trump’s campaign has over the past month mounted multiple legal challenges in key swing states. These come in an attempt to overturn the results. Most of the lawsuits have been rejected in courts.
