House Passes Bill That Will Ban Biological Men From Competing in Women’s Sports
The House passed the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act on Thursday, amending Title IX to prohibit men from competing in women's sports.
The proposal, which passed 219 to 203, received no Democratic support.
The bill would explain that the term “sex” in the Education Amendments of 1972, under the Title IX section, “shall be recognized based solely on a person’s reproductive biology and genetics at birth.”
The measure would try to remove government funds from schools that violate Title IX by allowing transgender athletes to compete in sports programs meant for the opposite sex.
“It’s about muscle mass and it’s about fairness,” House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) said at a press conference. She stoo beside colleagues and three female student-athletes who had been forced to compete against biological males and lost out on opportunities because of it.
The bill comes as President Joe Biden's Department of Education increased its attempts this month to enable males who claim to be women to participate in women's sports through a Title IX regulation proposal.
Despite the measure is unlikely to pass the Senate, the Biden administration has stated that if it reaches the president's desk, he will veto it.
The White House argued that the bill “targets people for who they are and therefore is discriminatory.”
“Transgender youth already face a nationwide mental health crisis,” the White House stated.
According to House Republican Conference chair Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY), per Breitbart News, regardless of Biden’s opinion, Republicans “are going to continue driving this agenda, and we’re going to win in 2024 to pass this into law.”
On the morning of the bill's passage, Stefanik joined around 20 other Republican women to celebrate their work to protect female competitiveness in sports.
