  • Hurricane Matthew has just touched down in Haiti.
  • So far, Matthew has claimed the lives of three people, one in Haiti, one in Colombia, and one in St. Vincent.
  • It is expected to reach Cuba by late Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning.
  • This is the first category 4 hurricane to hit Haiti in 50 years.

It seems that Haiti is in for a rough couple of months. Hurricane Matthew, a category 4 hurricane, touched ground on Haiti's peninsula early Tuesday morning. At 7 am the citizens of Haiti were greeted with 145 mph winds. The last reported category 4 hurricane to hit the heart of Haiti was Hurricane Inez, 50 years ago, back in 1966.

Matthew is expected to move across Eastern Cuba by late Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning.

John Hasse, an aid worker with the humanitarian organization World Vision said, “We’re expecting a lot of houses to go down because of the poor housing infrastructure in a lot of the rural areas where we work. With wind this strong, it will be extremely damaging and dangerous and homes for the average person are made of mud and sticks or poorly constructed cinderblocks.”

Haiti is still recovering from an earthquake that ravished the country almost seven years ago. Combine that with the ensuing Cholera epidemic that continues to sweep the nation, you get a country that is already on the brink of breaking.

So far Matthew has claimed three lives as it has moved across the Caribbean. One fisherman died off the coast of Haiti as the storm hit, one man was killed in Colombia, and a teen was killed in St. Vincent.

So far the deadliest storm to ever come to Haiti has been Hurricane Sandy, back in 2012. Although it did not directly hit Haiti it claimed the lives of 75 people and left $250 million in damages in its wake.

It is still unsure if Matthew will make it to America or not.
