Inmate Granted Early Release Gets Arrested After Attacking Woman in Her 60s

33-year-old Matthew Cory, a Washington inmate who was granted early release because of the COVID-19 pandemic, has been arrested after choking a woman on a hiking trail.

Cory reportedly snuck up behind the woman – reportedly in her 60s. He attacked her while she was resting on a trail in Everett. Court documents also say that the woman was able to loosen Cory’s grip and scream out loud, making Cory run away.

Q13 Fox reported that police found Cory running through the woods, and the victim positively identified him as her attacker.

The documents say that Cory said he had no memory of the attack. According to him, he had been using meth for two weeks and had not slept in a week.

Fox News reported that the inmate left jail on May 2nd. He removed his ankle monitor ten days later, making police lose track of him.

Cory was one of many other inmates released as an effort to curb the spread of the coronavirus in prisons. The release of these inmates became a cause for concern for local law enforcement regarding public safety.

“I feel the release of these additional offenders is of great risk to public safety,” said Lewis County Sheriff Robert Snaza in a press release. “My fear is this will create additional concerns for local law enforcement as we struggle with the challengers already facing us from the COVID-19 pandemic, and its effect on routine operations,” he then added.
