Indian Actor Irrfan Khan Dies at 53
Indian actor Irrfan Khan, 53, has died on Wednesday in a Mumbai hospital. On Wednesday morning, a statement confirmed his death.
“It’s saddening that this day, we have to bring forward the news of him passing away,” read the statement. “Irrfan was a strong soul, someone who fought till the very end and always inspired everyone who came close to him,” it also said.
According to The Times of India, Khan had a colon infection, which he sought treatment for.
Khan appeared in well-known movies such as “Slumdog Millionaire” (2008) and “Life of Pi” (2012). U.S. audiences also knew Khan for his appearances in films such as “The Amazing Spider-Man” (2012) and “Jurassic World” (2015).
Khan disclosed on Twitter in 2018 that he had an endocrine tumor.

“Surrounded by his love, his family for whom he most cared about, he left for heaven above, leaving behind truly a legacy of his own. We all pray and hope that he is at peace,” read a statement from Khan’s publicity firm.
Khan was born Sahabzada Irfan Ali Khan on January 7, 1967 in the Rajasthan village of Tonk. According to BBC, his mother came from a royal line. Meanwhile, his wealthy father came from more humble beginnings as a “self-made businessman who owned a tyre business.”
BBC also reported that Khan would speak openly and controversially about both his Muslim religion and the film industries where he worked.
“I always object to the word Bollywood,” he once told the Guardian. “That industry has its own technique that… has nothing to do with aping Hollywood. It originates in Parsi theatre,” he then added.
“Hollywood is too planned. India has no planning at all. It's more spontaneous and informal. India could be more formal and Hollywood more spontaneous,” he also said.
The Guardian also reported that “despite his status as one of Bollywood’s most celebrated actors, Khan had a reputation for modesty and integrity.”
