Israeli Attacks on Iranian Miltary and Nuclear Targets Trigger Global Alarm

Yesterday, Israel launched a multi-day air campaign against Iran, targeting its nuclear program and top military officials. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed the Israeli attacks in a video statement Friday, saying the operation would last “as many days as it takes.” The Israel Defense Forces said 200 fighter jets carried out coordinated strikes on Iranian missile bases, air defense systems, and nuclear facilities. Among the sites hit was Natanz, Iran’s main uranium enrichment complex. Satellite images and footage from the ground confirmed widespread damage.

High-Level Targets and Strategic Sites Hit

Iranian officials confirmed that General Hossein Salami and Major General Mohammad Bagheri were killed in the strikes. The two were among the highest-ranking military officers in Iran. Israeli sources said the goal of the operation was to eliminate personnel directly involved in Iran’s nuclear weaponization program.

According to the United Nations’ nuclear watchdog, three other nuclear sites—Fordow, Isfahan, and Bushehr—were not affected by the strikes. However, Natanz sustained visible damage although there have been no reports of radiation leaks or contamination.

The attack follows years of rising tension between the two countries, with Israel long warning that Iran’s nuclear progress poses a direct threat. Israeli intelligence believes Tehran could produce a nuclear weapon within a year. Iran denies any effort to develop a bomb, stating its program is for peaceful purposes.

Iranian Retaliation Begins as Tensions Rise

In response, Iran launched more than 100 drones at Israeli territory. Israeli defense forces intercepted most, but the risk of further action remains high. Iran has also called for an emergency session of the United Nations Security Council, accusing Israel of violating international law and threatening regional security.

Tehran’s leadership has warned that future responses may include strikes on U.S. military bases throughout the region. Defense Minister Aziz Nasirzadeh said that all American facilities within range would be considered targets if the conflict escalates.

The United States, while informed of Israel’s plans, denied involvement in the operation. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the Israeli attacks were carried out without U.S. support. He also confirmed the Trump administration is preparing contingency plans to protect American forces in Iraq, Qatar, and other Middle East posts.

International Condemnation and Flight Disruptions

Multiple Arab countries, including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Oman, condemned the Israeli attacks. Even nations that have recently improved relations with Israel, such as the UAE, criticized the strikes and warned of further instability.

European and Asian countries also called for restraint. India, the UK, Australia, and New Zealand issued statements urging both nations to avoid escalation. China opposed what it called an infringement on Iran’s sovereignty and offered to mediate peace talks.

Global air travel has already been affected. Flights to and from Iran, Iraq, and parts of Israel have been suspended. Qatar Airways, Emirates, Air India, and Lufthansa confirmed changes to their routes or flight cancellations. Several international airports in Iran and Iraq remain closed.

Domestic Pressure and Political Timing

Netanyahu’s announcement comes during a period of internal crisis in Israel. His government narrowly avoided dissolution after opposition to a military draft law nearly forced early elections. Analysts suggest the timing of the Israeli attacks may be tied to political instability at home and pressure to reassert control.

Meanwhile, U.S.–Iran nuclear talks, previously scheduled to resume in Oman, have been suspended. Diplomatic sources now say that the Israeli attacks have likely ended any chance of short-term negotiations. Both sides appear to be preparing for a longer conflict.

With key military leaders killed and nuclear infrastructure damaged, Tehran may choose a broader response. The Israeli attacks have pushed the region into a new phase of open conflict, with no clear path forward.
