Kamala Harris tells DACA Dreamers U.S. “Is Your Home”
On Thursday, while talking to DACA recipients and Dreamers, Vice President Kamala Harris told the group of illegal aliens that they can call the U.S. their home.
“This your home,” Harris told them. She added that they recognize these people as Americans. She then added that the issue of arriving in the U.S. was about “self-determination,” also saying that critics of welcoming illegal aliens in the county have a “limited ability” to understand the concept of who these people are.
“Dreamers” is what is widely used to call people brought to America illegally by their parents when they were kids. As of writing this article, DACA protects around 650,000 people.
During her speech, the vice president starred by stating that the conversation topic is about “who are we as a country” as well as the future of the nation.
She noted that many Americans in recent years live a life of uncertainty despite living at the only place they call home. Harris exclaimed that these people deserve a way to become citizens. She then told the Dreamers that the U.S is their home.
Harris then mentioned that she and President Joe Biden recognize them as Americans who deserve a way to become citizens of the country. She then promised that they will continue to work towards the goal of providing the means to do so.
Harris Says She Will Continue the Fight to Create the Pathway to Citizenship for DACA Dreamers
The vice president then noted that this conversation is happening following a recent federal court ruling. However, she clarified that the said ruling will not immediately affect current DACA grantees. Although, she did recognize that the ruling can put many young immigrants in jeopardy. She then reiterated that the current administration is making a move. Through the Justice Department, they revealed that they intend to appeal the decision. Additionally, the Homeland Security Department revealed that it plans to propose a new rule connected to DACA and its enforcement piece.”
Harris then said Congress needs to create a pathway in which Dreamers can become U.S. citizens. She mentioned that she spoke with Sen. Dick Durbin regarding the topic and that they stand in solidarity regarding this issue, in which they said they will not give up.
As a final point, Harris mentioned that it's about the morally right thing to do. It reflects what the people say they are as a country. She then claimed that this issue is also connected to self-determination.
Following this, Harris also mocked the people who criticize her.
She finished her address by saying these issues are at stake at the moment. Harris reiterated that they will not give up in making sure they can support Dreamers and create a means for them to attain citizenship.
