Donald Trump's return to the presidency has reignited debates over mass deportation, a centerpiece of his 2024 campaign. Recent polls reveal growing public support for deporting undocumented immigrants, reflecting a broader rise in nativist sentiments. However, the data also highlights a complex landscape, with many Americans favoring pathways to citizenship alongside stricter immigration enforcement. 

The recent election’s exit polls indicate that Trump enjoys a nine-point advantage over Kamala Harris on immigration trust, underscoring his appeal to voters concerned about border policies. Yet, nuanced questions reveal that 56% of voters still prefer offering undocumented immigrants legal status over deportation. This contradiction underscores the challenges of reconciling public sentiment with policy execution.

Public Opinion and the Framing of Deportation Questions

Public opinion on mass deportation varies significantly depending on how questions are framed. A Marquette Law School poll in October found 58% support for deportation when framed broadly, but only 40% when respondents were reminded that many immigrants have jobs and no criminal record. This suggests that empathy and practicality influence public attitudes. 

Similarly, a Gallup poll reported that 70% of Americans favor a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants meeting specific criteria. This includes overwhelming support for immigrants brought to the U.S. as children, with 81% favoring leniency. Despite these trends, broader nativist sentiments are growing. CNN’s October poll showed a 20-point rise since 2017 in the share of voters viewing immigration as a societal threat. These shifts align with the “thermostatic model” of public opinion, which reacts against the policies of sitting presidents. Under Trump, views leaned left; under Biden, they moved right.

Cost and Logistical Challenges of Mass Deportation

Trump’s allies have outlined ambitious plans to implement mass deportation. Incoming Vice President JD Vance has described the strategy as incremental, targeting violent criminals first before expanding efforts. Critics, however, highlight logistical and financial hurdles. The American Immigration Council estimates the operation could cost $315 billion. Additionally, using personal information provided by immigrants on government forms has raised legal and ethical concerns. 

Ava Ayers, an immigration law expert, warns of potential misuse of federal data, though some sanctuary cities are preparing to resist such efforts. Trump’s plan to restart workplace raids, halted during the Biden administration, signals an aggressive approach. Past raids, like those in Mississippi’s poultry plants, disrupted industries reliant on undocumented labor. Analysts predict similar actions could destabilize sectors like farming, where undocumented workers comprise a significant portion of the workforce.

A Pathway to Citizenship: Balancing Public Sentiment

Interestingly, a notable segment of Trump’s base advocates for a balanced approach. While they back deportation programs, many also support pathways to citizenship. Pew Research found 59% of voters in favor of legalizing undocumented immigrants who meet specific requirements, underscoring the public's nuanced stance. 

This duality complicates Trump’s narrative. His campaign rhetoric emphasizes enforcement, but sustained public support may depend on offering humane solutions. States like New York, a sanctuary jurisdiction, are preparing to shield migrant communities. Local leaders stress the need to resist federal overreach, with Governor Kathy Hochul reiterating the state's commitment to immigrant protections.
