McAuliffe Blames Biden’s lack of Popularity on Close Race in Virginia

A video teleconference captured Democrat Terry McAuliffe, who is running for governor in Virginia in 2022, raising his concern about President Joe Biden’s popularity in the state. This comes as many consider the upcoming election as a bellwether connected to Biden’s time in the Whitehouse.

The video posted by the Republican National Committee on Tuesday lasted for 12 seconds. It appeared to have shown the governor hopeful in an online meeting with around 12 other people.

“We got to get Democrats out to vote,” the former Virginia governor said. He added: “We are facing a lot of headwinds from Washington, as you know. The president is unpopular today, unfortunately here in Virginia, so we have got to plow through.”

The clip then stops after he said this comment.

Several Republicans seized on the clop. For one, Tommy Pigott, who serves as one of the GOP’s rapid response directors, posted on Twitter that a recent survey showed that only 46% of Virginia approves of Biden’s way of governing.

“And just like Virginia is rejecting Biden, voters will reject McAuliffe in November,” Pigott posted.

McAuliffe is set to go head to head against Republican Glenn Youngkin. According to recent polls, the state may see a close race. Mcauliffe hopes to win a second term following his first one that ended back in 2018. Meanwhile, Youngkin used to be a business executive.
