Netanyahu’s Speech to Congress Called Gaza Protesters “Iran’s Useful Idiots”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's speech to Congress last Wednesday included a condemnation of recent Gaza ceasefire protests across the United States. He accused Iran of masterminding the demonstrations while emphasizing the deep bond between Israel and America. “I have a message for these protesters,” Netanyahu declared. “When Tehran's tyrants who hang gays from cranes and murder women for not covering their hair are praising, promoting, and funding you, you have officially become Iran's useful idiots.”

Additionally, Netanyahu criticized the protesters who support Gaza. The Israeli PM equated their support to “Chickens for KFC” which guarantees their failure. He also highlighted the protesters' ignorance by pointing out their chant, “From the river to the sea,” and their lack of understanding of its meaning.

Rising Tensions in Congress Includes Tlaib's Silent Protest

The nearly-full House chamber included members of Congress and notable guests like freed Israeli hostages taken by Hamas on October 7. Noted right-wing billionaire and social media owner Elon Musk was also in attendance. Netanyahu's speech to Congress aimed to reinforce the U.S.-Israel alliance, asserting that their mutual enemies require a united front. However, not everybody cheered. Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., known for her critical stance on Israel, staged a silent protest during Netanyahu's speech. She held a sign demanding a ceasefire, which she eventually put down after being approached by House Sergeant-at-Arms staff.

Netanyahu tied Israel's battle against Hamas and Iranian proxies to unrest in the U.S., emphasizing Israel's role in protecting both nations. “We're not only protecting ourselves, we're protecting you,” he said, receiving a standing ovation. “Our enemies are your enemies. Our fight is your fight. And our victory will be your victory. Ladies and gentlemen, that victory is in sight. Israel's defeat of Hamas will be a powerful blow to Iran's axis of terror.”

Netanyahu Channels His Inner Churchill

This address marked Netanyahu's fourth speech to Congress and his first since Hamas's attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023. His speech comes amidst increasing skepticism from the Biden administration and Democratic lawmakers regarding Netanyahu's handling of Israel's response in Gaza.

Netanyahu argued that continued U.S. support for Israel could prevent direct American involvement in the conflict. He compared the current situation to World War II, likening himself to former U.K. Prime Minister Winston Churchill. “We help keep American boots off the ground while protecting our shared interests in the Middle East,” Netanyahu asserted. “I deeply appreciate America's support, including in this current war. But this is an exceptional moment. Fast-tracking U.S. military aid can dramatically expedite an end to the war in Gaza and help prevent a broader war in the Middle East.”

Netanyahu’s Speech to Congress Includes Appeal to US to Fast-Track Military Aid

Netanyahu's reference to Churchill's famous plea, “Give us the tools and we'll finish the job,” resonated with many. He appealed to America to expedite military aid to ensure a swift resolution to the Gaza conflict.

All in all, Netanyahu's speech to Congress was met with broad applause from Republicans, while the reaction from Democrats was more mixed. The Gaza conflict has exposed divisions within the Democratic Party, between its traditional side and the progressive Left, which is critical of Israel's conservative government.

Added Calls for Strengthening US-Israeli Partnership

Netanyahu's speech to Congress highlighted the importance of the U.S.-Israel alliance. He stressed that Israel's fight against terrorism directly benefits American security. The Israeli Prime Minister's call for unity and expedited aid aims to strengthen this enduring partnership in the face of shared threats.

The Israeli Prime Minister’s powerful speech served as a reminder of the deep-rooted alliance between the United States and Israel. His critique of the protests and strong words against Iran highlighted the complexities and stakes involved in the Gaza conflict.

Uniting Against Common Adversaries

By drawing parallels to historical events and appealing for expedited support, Netanyahu reinforced the message in his speech to Congress that Israel's security efforts are intrinsically linked to America's interests. This approach not only aims to garner more robust support from American lawmakers but also seeks to unify the two nations against common adversaries.

As Israel continues to confront its challenges in Gaza, the Prime Minister’s address underscores the necessity of a strong and unwavering U.S.-Israel alliance. Netanyahu's speech to Congress emphasized that this partnership is pivotal not just for regional stability, but for global peace and security.
