People in New York are crossing state lines in order to get workouts done as gyms remain closed in the state due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Fox Business mentioned 27-year-old Allie Melendez who had to put her gym membership on hold and bought a spin bike and a treadmill. However, after four months of staying at home, “she and her fiancé decided to take a personal training class at a boutique gym in Greenwich, Connecticut, earlier this month just 15 minutes away from her home in New York.”

“I got tired of at-home workouts because we are limited without weights,” Melendez said.

Melendez explained that masks were always required during her training session. She also felt safe since there were only five people at the studio, and all were observing social distancing. However, she said driving out of town felt like too much.

“I’m just ready for my regular gym to be open,” she said.

Other New Yorkers have also been traveling to workout. “There’s been a lot of people coming in from Portchester and the Bronx,” said a staff member at a Crunch gym franchise in Norwalk, Connecticut.

In Greenwich, boutique fitness studios have also seen some guests come from neighboring Westchester County towns.

Johns Hopkins University data shows that as of Thursday, Connecticut had 48,223 confirmed cases of COVID-19. Meanwhile, New York had 409,697 confirmed cases. Gyms in Connecticut were allowed to reopen on June 17th with capacity limits cut in half.
