California Surpasses New York as State with Highest Number of Coronavirus Cases
The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in California has topped 409,000 – surpassing New York for most in the U.S.
Despite the number of cases in California, New York's 32,520 deaths are by far the highest total in the country. It's also four times more than the count in California.
According to Fox Business, California is the most populous U.S. state with approximately 40 million. Meanwhile, New York has around 19.5 million.
NBC Los Angeles reported that California confirmed 12,807 new cases on Tuesday. It reported the state's “highest single-day total since the start of the pandemic.”

“We're doing all we can to make sure that we control the rate of spread, despite crossing 400,000 cases in California,” said state Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Mark Ghaly. “In the end I really expect and hope California is going to be the state that adapted the most, learned the most and prepared the best.”
According to U.S. government data, reported and confirmed coronavirus cases underestimate the true number of infections. The country has also had consistent testing failures that may have contributed to an undercount.
Fox Business explained that California was initially able to slow the spread of the virus, “but the state has had a sharp reversal, with COVID-19 infection rates climbing sharply in recent weeks.”
“The tragedy of what we are witnessing is that many of our younger residents are interacting with each other and not adhering to the recommended prevention measures, while our older residents continue to experience the results of this increased spread with the worst health outcomes, including death,” said Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer.
