  • Donald Trump, while at the NRA convention this weekend, said that “school resource officers” or trained teachers should be allowed to carry guns on school grounds.
  • Trump did go on to say that he doesn’t think guns should be allowed in classrooms, except for trained teachers.
  • Trump said, “we’re getting rid of gun free zones, I can tell you.”

Donald Trump has walked back his hard line on guns in schools as expressed at last week's NRA conference which came amid a string of accidental shootings in recent weeks.

The presumptive Republican presidential nominee, who was recently endorsed by the NRA, told CNN on Monday that “school resource officers” or trained teachers should be allowed to carry guns on school grounds. Trump had previously argued against gun-free zones in schools and military bases.

On average, 567 people are accidentally killed by guns each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Since Trump first took a stand against gun-free zones on Oct. 28, when he called them “a catastrophe” and a “feeding frenzy for sick people” during the third GOP presidential debate, there have been at least 32 school shootings. Six were unintentional, and four of them occurred this month alone, according to data collected by the Everytown for Gun Safety Support Fund, a New York-based nonprofit that advocates for gun control.

The most recent took place at a graduation ceremony at Augusta High School in Kansas on May 15. Police said a man who had a concealed carry permit accidentally shot his foot when he went to adjust a small gun tucked in his sock. The bullet also ricocheted off the ground before striking another person, who was rushed to the hospital in serious condition. The man was treated at a local hospital and released, according to ABC News affiliate KAKE in Wichita, Kansas.

In a separate incident two days earlier, a 16-year-old student at Southside High School in Greenville County, South Carolina, accidentally shot himself with a gun he brought to school. The teen was taken to a local hospital for non-threatening injuries. Police said a 17-year-old student at the school was also in possession of a pistol but did not discharge it. Both students are facing charges, ABC News affiliate WLOS in Asheville, North Carolina, reported.

“It's really scary to just think that your relative or child or anybody you know is inside the school and is in danger,” Angela Little, whose niece witnessed the shooting, told WLOS.

On Sunday, during a call-in interview with Fox News’ “Fox & Friends,” the billionaire businessman said he didn't want to “have guns in classrooms.”

“Although, in some cases, teachers should have guns in classrooms. Things that are going on in our schools are unbelievable. You look at some of our schools, unbelievable what’s going on. But I’m not advocating guns in classrooms,” he added.

“But remember, in some cases – and a lot of people have made this case – teachers should be able to have guns,” Trump continued. “Trained teachers should be able to have guns in classrooms.”

Speaking at the NRA's annual convention in Kentucky last Friday, Trump vowed to eliminate gun-free zones in the country, including some schools and military bases where guns cannot be lawfully carried by most individuals. He also slammed Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton over her stance on guns.

“We’re getting rid of gun-free zones, I can tell you,” he said. “Crooked Hillary Clinton is the most anti-gun, anti-Second Amendment candidate ever to run for office. And, as I said before, she wants to abolish the Second Amendment. She wants to take your guns away. She wants to abolish it.”

Clinton was quick to fire back, accusing Trump of pandering to the gun lobby and calling for “dangerous” gun policies. Trump immediately took to Twitter to respond to the former U.S. secretary of state’s remarks.

But the real estate mogul was singing a different tune in January. Trump said gun-free zones were simply “bait” for shooters.

“I will get rid of gun-free zones in schools and — you have to — on military bases,” Trump said at a campaign event in Burlington, Vermont. “My first day, it gets signed, okay? My first day. They are no more gun-free zones.”

When I go into a “gun free zone” I feel as though I had a target taped to my chest & back! A law abiding citizen can’t be armed there but any crook or crackpot or terrotist has free range! Nuf said!

  • Hope says:

I know if we can defend ourselves we will be safer.I want to keep my guns so that my family is safe.

  • marvin wilson says:

qualified people that carry concealed guns can take out the bad guys that come into schools etc. before they can cause a shooting spree or massacre, its not all that complicated except for the liberals.

  • Dale Gilleland says:

It seems most shootings occur in gun free zones where the concealed carry is prohibited. The bad guy knows he’s safer. People don’t respond correctly to a shooter in a crowded theater etc. In Isreal crowds are trained to attack the shooter in mass, not flee. If you are going to disarm the public, at least have the courtesy to train them when they are placed at risk by your rules.

the second amendment clearly states that Congress shall make NO LAW that infringes on the right t keep and bear arms. And that is in the Constitution so it is the same for every person, town, City, cocounty, and state in the entire country. Anyone can carry s gun anywhere in the United States of American That is the Law of the land.

Trump “owes” no one, anywhere, especially from Washington. He’s his own man and believe it, he knows financials!!

  • Michael Thuna says:

a gun-free zone is probably the first place a criminal would try and shoot up and kill as many people as he could. If someone was shooting back at him, there would be less Good guys dying.

  • Vic Zuliani says:

It’s in the Constitution of the United States. It is wrong to change what is in it and what is in the Bill of Rights. I didn’t were a military uniform to have some one change what I and many others have fought and died for.

  • Daniel Roady says:

Gun Free Zones are soft targets and an open invitation for wrong doers, foreign and domestic.

  • JP says:

When I see a gun free zone sign, I either do not go in or, where available use outdoor seating. There are usually choices with no such signage offering similar products and services. Use the power of your purse.

  • David says:

The issue with “gun laws” is that politicians forget that we do NOT enforce the laws we already have. We also need to remember that “gun deaths” while being “sexy” for TV by FACT they are NOT a major (or even minor) cause of death in the USA. Now, once the politicians have resolved all 200 of the things that actually DO kill Americans, then perhaps we could sit down and have a chat about guns. Until then, politicians only talk about guns because of an agenda OTHER than “saving lives”.

Guns should be allowed where you want your citizens to be protected. That includes schools. ALL of them. I know that I would not be a teacher today, UNLESS you allowed me to carry a weapon. You are a target, and forced to stay a target with current laws.

  • Paul kern says:

To protect our kids , teachers should carry fire arms.

  • larry says:

I completely agree with DT. Sandy Hook would have had less student death DT’s way.
Animals (people) that attack innocent children and defenseless individuals are gutless and worthless. They are lower than the belly of a snake. If we would meet these individuals with like lethal force there would be less innocent lives lost. They can be stopped and they will be stopped.

  • mark kraus says:

proven-time and again that areas for carrying of firearms have fewer deaths and violence than gun free zones have!

  • LARRY BAILEY says:

I believe that a gun free zone is just an invitation for some one to take advantage of the incident

  • Roger Elliott says:

I believe everyone should have the right to self protection.

  • Richard says:

    It is only common sense.

  • Duke says:

Absolutely hot damn right, no kid of mine is gonna be cannon fodder for some sicko who’s got a bone to pick but not the balls to do it the right way , so lets go kill some poor kids to get our 15 minutes of fame…. not on my watch…

  • Robert Seal says:

Because it is our right to have guns and if they are taken away from us then only criminals will have them and the government will have them and full control of us.

  • Paul N Ransom says:

If there were people trained to use a gun it’s possible that a lot of these school shooting might never have happened or at least less damage done by the shooter!!

  • Jay Proctor says:

We are in serious trouble if criminals are the only ones carrying guns any more! Pretty simple isn’t it?

  • Walt Conte says:

His has flip flopped so many times on his stance, when are we supposed to believe the Flim Flam Man?!? And do you think a teacher with a concealed carry which in most states requires very little, if any training is a deterrent? Get real.

  • Erik Valset says:

And where do many if not most mass shootings happen? In gun-free zones!! Criminals don’t obey the law anyway. Allowing law-abiding citizens to carry will make the deranged killers think twice

  • Robert Dayton says:

Gun Free zones are insane, as they just make
a zone that is full of defenseless sheeple and are prime targets for thugs, nut cases or terrorists.

  • Jim says:

GET THEM TRUMP ! WE DON”T NEED ANOTHER OBUMER IN WHITE HOUSE !

  • Greg says:

I really don’t want guns being available in school or toted by a teacher. You might think it’s safer, but I disagree. If someone were to come in and a gunfight happens, kids are going to get in between. I’d much rather find a way to keep guns out. That would include metal detectors and door monitoring. Trump is a fucking idiot. I’m sure, judging from his debates and his responses, he’s in favor of everything that will destroy this country. I really don’t want to see an America that can’t feel safe, unless every fucker out there needs to be armed.

  • steve krieger says:

For their protection and the students protection!

  • David Sessums says:

If you are not allowed to have a weapon to protect your family and your property you are a sitting duck for the criminals, because they are not going to give up their weapons.

  • Gunfree zones are the most idiotic things I can think of..the people that would use a gun to harm someone arent going to be pursueded by a gunfrree zone to not commit the crime..if gunfree zones worked we could eliminate robberies in banks by making them all gunfree zones..And in front of just about every convenience store there is a notice on the door or window that it is a felony to carry a gun into the store..THAT SIGN HAS NEVER STOPPED A ROBBERY!..

  • Curtis Jones Jr. says:

Guns don’t kill people do. Bad guns are afraid of guns.

  • James Pearce says:

There are to many gun related crimes and mass shootings, that if only one or two people were carrying guns the madness could be stopped.

  • ANNIE NELSON says:

I THINK THAT GUN FREE ZONES ATTRACT TERRORISTS AND CRAZY SHOOTERS BECAUSE THEY KNOW THAT PEOPLE ARE DEFENSELESS.

  • A Scott Logan says:

It just makes good common sense to have vetted and trained security officers and/or teachers with guns in schools to protect the unarmed children from psychotic and terrorist killers. It just makes sense!

  • chas collins says:

they keep letting people in to kill us need keep country safe
