Over 800 Crew Members of USS Theodore Roosevelt Test Positive for the Coronavirus

The whole crew of the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt underwent a test for the novel coronavirus. According to U.S. Navy officials, over 800 samples consequently came back positive.

The ship’s former captain Brett Crozier was relieved of command. This was due to Croizer being accused of going “outside the chain of command” as he reportedly leaked a letter to the media. In it, he raised concerns about the above 200 sailors on the ship who tested positive for the virus.

“100% of USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) crewmembers have been tested for COVID-19, with 840 total positive and 4,098 negative results (a small number of results are still pending). Of the total cases, 88 Sailors have recovered, and 4,234 Sailors have moved ashore,” said the U.S. Navy on an update posted on April 23rd.

Fox News also reported that the Roosevelt pulled into Guam on March 27th, about 10 days early, as the virus spread around the ship.

The Navy’s report says that the Navy Reserve has more than 1,500 sailors engaged in COVID-19 pandemic relief efforts around the world. This includes including over 650 Reservists at the Javits Center and local hospitals in the New York City area. It also includes over 200 Reservists serving aboard the USNS Mercy and USNS Comfort.
