Pence Proud Trump Avoided Engaging in New War
Vice President Mike Pence has expressed that he is proud of outgoing President Donald Trump’s administration for being one that didn’t involve the United States in a new war.
Pence visited the Naval Air Station in Lemoore, California on Saturday and Fort Drum, New York on Sunday. In these two military bases, he delivered his last few speeches as the country’s vice president. Pence took the opportunity to say how proud he was of the outgoing administration. The current administration was the “first in decades” to avoid the country from getting entangled in a war.
He echoed these sentiments on Twitter, where he described the feat as “Peace through Strength.”
The outgoing vice president’s tweet was, however, met with backlash as the Capitol building riot was still fresh off the minds of many Americans. Many on Twitter argued that while Trump did not involve the country in international wars, he created one within the nation.
On Jan. 6, a mob of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol building as lawmakers were in session to certify President-elect Joe Biden’s win during the 2020 Presidential Election. The violent insurrection resulted in the death of five people and the arrest of at least 70.
A statement released by the White House in October last year outlined the administration’s military accomplishments. These feats did not require the country to conduct a major military deployment. These include the deaths of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi and Qasem Soleimani.
The statement said that Trump is the first president since Ronald Reagan who did not start a war. It added that, instead, Trump managed to rebuild the military and “restored American sovereignty.”
