Jean-Pierre is New Press Secretary, Good Riddance Jen Psaki

Deputy Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre will assume the role vacated by her boss Jen Psaki. President Joe Biden announced that beginning May 13, Jean-Pierre will serve as the new White House Press Secretary.

Jean-Pierre becomes the first black and LGBTQ person to hold the position of Press Secretary. She is currently Psaki’s deputy and is often seen filling in when her boss is unavailable.

“Karine not only brings the experience, talent and integrity needed for this difficult job,” Biden said. “She will continue to lead the way in communicating about the work of the Biden-Harris Administration on behalf of the American people.” 

In addition, Biden added that outgoing press secretary Jen Psaki will return to the private sector after a year at the White House. Psaki “set the standard for returning decency, respect and decorum to the White House Briefing Room,” Biden added.

CNN reported last month that upon leaving the administration, Psaki will start her new job at MSNBC. 

Jean-Pierre Worked As Psaki’s Understudy

Last May, Jean-Pierre became the second Black woman to hold the White House’s daily press briefings. Prior to her appointment, she served on the White House senior communications team.

During the elections, Jean-Pierre was a Biden campaign adviser and chief-of-staff to now-VP Kamala Harris.

Meanwhile, the new press secretary said she has yet to come to terms with the new job. “I am still processing it because, as Jen said, at the top this is a historic moment and it's not lost on me.

I understand how important it is for so many people out there. So many different communities that I stand on their shoulders. It is an honor and a privilege to be behind this podium,” she added. 

Psaki Planned To Leave Months Ago

Psaki’s departure from the White House is unsurprising. Since last year, Biden’s original press secretary communicated her plans to stay for just one year at the job.

During an interview with former Obama official David Axelrod last May, she reiterated that she won’t go beyond her planned one year into the job.   

As a result, Jean-Pierre has big shoes to fill. As the primary frontline of the White House’s press corps, she will have to deal with daily issues while staying level-headed.

Psaki, who ruffled a lot of feathers during her tenure, is admittedly consistent in her press briefings. However, the Association of Mature American Citizens also noted her thinly-veiled elitism. 

It wrote that “for many Americans, Psaki has come to personify the elitist condescension and out-of-touch arrogance of Biden-era progressivism.” 

Instead, Psaki became famous (or notorious) for bursts of short tempers on media members who had the temerity to ask a lot of questions.

AMAC wrote that often, Psaki will dismiss questions about real issues, “often with a heavy dose of scorn and sarcasm”. In fact, her “contentious comments’ led to the coining of the phrase “Psaki Bomb.”
