Procter and Gamble Recalls More Than 30 Hair Care Products
According to a recall notice issued by Procter and Gamble Friday, the company began recalling more than 30 hair care products.
The affected brands include Pantene, Herbal Essences, Hair Food, Old Spice, and Aussie products. This is Procter and Gamble’s second recall notice within a month.
Procter and Gamble posted a list of all affected products on its company website. This includes the production code numbers covering the recall.
The company asked customers who purchased the products to throw them away, However, Procter and Gamble offered full refunds.
Customers can fill out and submit an online form or contact a hotline at 1-888-674-36319. The phone support is open Monday through Friday from 9 am to 6 pm Eastern time.
Procter and Gamble Hair Care Products Have Benzene
Meanwhile, the company said that they have yet to receive reports of adverse events due to the recalled products.
However, it clarified that daily exposure to the level of benzene detected in the products isn’t likely to cause negative health effects. The company identified the offending ingredient as Benzene.
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classifies Benzene as a substance that can potentially cause cancer. This depends on the level and extent of exposure.
Despite the low risk, Procter and Gamble said it will move forward with the recall out of “an abundance of caution”. The company also advised retailers to remove the offending products from their shelves.
“Exposure to benzene can occur by inhalation, orally, and through the skin and it can result in cancers, including leukemia and blood cancer of the bone marrow and blood disorders which can be life-threatening,” the recall notice said.
Procter And Gamble Earlier Recalled Old Spice and Secret
Last month, the company also announced a recall for about a dozen Old Spice and Secret aerosol deodorants and sprays. The products also contained benzene.
Pharmacies across the US also recalled Johnson & Johnson sunscreen products earlier this year. The products in the recall list also contained benzene.
Exposure to the chemical can happen through inhalation, oral intake, or skin absorption. Unfortunately, benzene can lead to cancers including leukemia, a blood cancer of the bone marrow, and blood disorders that can be life-threatening.
