On Tuesday, Republican Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky told Fox News’ Sean Hannity that he plans to seek criminal action in connection to lying to Congress against Dr. Anthony Fauci. The National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Diseases director had inconsistent statements regarding the approval of funding research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

Rand Paul said Fauci needs to face punishment for lying to Congress – a criminal offense.

Hannity noted that Paul started his questioning of Fauci by emphasizing that, according to federal law, lying to Congress is a felony that is punishable by up to five years in prison. Hannity then asked Paul if the senator believed Fauci lied to Congress and broke federal law.

To this, Paul answered “yes” and said he plans to send a letter to the Justice Department. The senator added that he will ask for a criminal referral because he believes the NIAID director lied before Congress.

Paul then added that dozens of scientists have deemed that the research Fauci’s agency funded was gain-of-function. This comes contrary to what the doctor alleged during the questioning. During the interrogation, Fauci said the scientists they consulted with did not deem it as such.

Additionally, Paul accused Fauci of lying because of the doctor’s “self-interest” to “cover his tracks” and his “connection to the Wuhan Lab.”

The senator recognized that Fauci doesn’t deserve all the blame as “conjecture” still exists about whether the SARS-COV virus did actually come from the lab. However, Fauci still lied when it came to funding gain-of-function research. For this, Paul believes Fauci needs to face punishment.
