Trump: Republican Voters Will Not Vote In 2022 and 2024

Former President Donald Trump said until the 2020 election fraud gets resolved, Republican voters will not vote in 2022 and 2024. Trump delivered the ultimatum in a statement published in a political action website Save America.

Republican Voters To Stay Away From 2022 and 2024 Elections

A year after the elections, Trump warned that until election issues get resolved, Republican voters will stay away from the polls.

“If we don't solve the Presidential Election Fraud of 2020 (which we have thoroughly and conclusively documented), Republicans will not be voting in '22 or '24. It is the single most important thing for Republicans to do,” the statement said. 

However, the snag in Trump’s warning is getting official support. Official audits and reports concluded that despite his and his allies’ claims, the 2020 elections did not have widespread fraud.

In fact, the Department of Homeland Security declared the election the “most secure in American history.”

Trump Hinting At a 2024 Run For the Presidency

Meanwhile, the former president is regularly hinting at another run for the presidency. During his various appearance in conventions and rallies, Trump continues to insist that he did not lose the election.

Instead, the other party stole the election. According to Cas Mudde, a University of Georgia professor of international affairs, the stolen election is a central narrative for GOP discussions.

Trump’s claims are further eroding trust in the political system. Mudde, a professor emeritus, specializes in extremism and democracy. 

Despite his loss in the recent elections, Trump continues to dominate the Republican party. His name is the most bankable among potential GOP candidates in 2024, which includes Florida governor Ron DeSantis and Texas senator Ted Cruz.

A loyal voter base also remains solidly behind Trump. In fact, Mudde said that Trump’s warning creates a problem for the party.

With Trump’s insistence to resolve the 2020 election issues, “GOP candidates have to find a balance between saying they are pro-Trump and pro-vote,” Mudde said. 

Trump’s Message Is ‘a Power Play’

Despite the conflicting messaging, Mudde believes that Trump's most recent threat is “mostly a power play” aimed at Republican officials. “He wants to remain at the center of GOP politics and prevent the party from moving on without him,” Mudde added.

Meanwhile, Washington Post correspondent Phillip Bump theorized that the former president's ultimatum was not a threat to withhold his voter base from participating.

Instead, Bump theorized that the former president said that as an explanation as to why his supporters won’t vote. 

In fact, Mudde said that Trump made this threat before. During the run-off for the Georgia Senate elections, Trump backed off from his threat to keep his base from supporting the GOP candidates.

However, Democrats still managed to win both seats. Mudde thinks that the former president will likely downplay his most recent threat in a similar way.

Trump’s Republican Voters Are Critical For the 2022 Race

The GOP should take Trump’s threats seriously. Mudde believes that the former president’s remarks can thin out the Republican vote in the coming election.

However, the upcoming midterm elections can end in tight races in several races. Trump’s Republican voters can spell the difference.

Despite Trump’s continued allegations against voter fraud, both he and the rest of the GOP are confident that they can retake the House and the Senate in 2022.

Current sentiment against the current president and his administration’s performance is already doing the damage themselves.
