Rudy Giuliani Suspended From Practicing Law In DC

Less than a month after losing his New York law license, Rudy Giuliani lost his business in Washington DC. Last Wednesday, a local appeals court in the District of Columbia suspended Giuliani’s permit to practice law. The action from the DC appellate court was automatic. The district requires an automatic review every time a lawyer receives disciplinary action from another jurisdiction.

Banned From Practicing Law In Washington DC

Giuliani, who repeatedly claimed rampant fraud during the 2020 presidential election, will now lose his practice in the nation’s capital. He can only resume his practice if he can manage to resolve his earlier suspension in New York. Meanwhile, Giuliani himself did not immediately respond to a request for comment on his suspension.

Rudy Giuliani Lost His License In New York Earlier

The beleaguered lawyer is now banned from practicing law in one state and a district. Earlier last June, a New York appellate court suspended Giuliani's law license. The five-judge panel from the New York Supreme Court appellate court concluded that Giuliani didn’t exactly conduct himself ethically during the elections. 

In its 33-page decision, the NY panel said that there is no doubt that Giuliani gave many false and misleading statements to the court and the public at large.

The statements were in line with the lawyer’s repeated statements that his client won the election and was a victim of massive cheating. However, Giuliani and the other Trump lawyers failed to show irrefutable proof of their allegations and convince the courts.

“We conclude that there is uncontroverted evidence that respondent communicated demonstrably false and misleading statements to courts, lawmakers and the public at large in his capacity as lawyer for former President Donald J. Trump and the Trump campaign in connection with Trump’s failed effort at reelection in 2020,” the panel reported. 

Giuliani’s World Is Closing In

While Giuliani can appeal the decision, he cannot practice law in New York until he gets cleared to do so. It’s not just the courts that want nothing to do with the famous New York lawyer.

The New York State Bar Association also opened an inquiry about Rudy Giuliani’s behavior during his stint as Trump’s election attorney. Following the court decision, the NYSBA announced that they will remove Rudy Giuliani’s name from their association’s list of members. 

Earlier, Giuliani’s lawyers expressed disappointment in the court’s decision. They argued that New York doesn’t need to take action given that the election fight was already over. They also said that Rudy Giuliani will continue to exercise personal discipline to stop talking about election matters publicly. 

Trump Called Giuliani A Patriot

Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump, upon hearing of Giuliani’s New York suspension, offered his comments.  He said that his former election lawyer is a “great American patriot” and a victim like him. He dismissed Giuliani’s suspension as “nothing but a Witch Hunt.”
