San Jose City Council Passed $1,000 Fine for Gun Owners Refusing Liability Insurance
The city council of San Jose, California, has approved a $1,000 fine for residents who own firearms but refuse to comply with the city's liability insurance requirement for gun owners.
According to Breitbart News, the city council of San Jose passed the gun liability insurance requirement on January 25, 2022. The Mercury News also noted that the said requirement for gun owners was coupled with a requirement that gun owners pay $25-35 yearly to a city-designated non-profit, the latter referred to as a gun owners' fee.
Back on February 6, San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo (D) discussed seizing firearms from people who refuse to comply with the city's new liability insurance requirement or pay the new gun owners' fee with Slate.
According to the Mercury News, the San Jose city council voted on penalties for refusing the liability insurance mandate on Tuesday, October 18, and agreed to levy “up to $1,000 in fines.”
The first offense carries a $250 fine, the second a $500 fine, and the third a $1,000 fine.
Mayor Liccardo commented on the penalty fee structure's passage, saying, “the nation law to reduce gun deaths and injuries with a careful, balanced approach. I look forward to seeing this up and running next year.”
