Sen. Rick Scott Floats 25th Amendment To Remove Biden

Republican Senator Rick Scott (R-FL) dangled the idea of having President Joe Biden removed from office via the 25th Amendment. He said that Biden already did more than enough damage. His latest debacle is allowing Afghanistan to fall back into Taliban control during the pullout of US troops from the country.

What In the World is Joe Biden Doing?

In a tweet last week, Scott outlined the problems caused by the President.“Inflation is raging. The debt ceiling expired & U.S. debt is headed to $45 TRILLION. Kabul is falling to the Taliban & encounters in the #BidenBorderCrisis just hit a 20 YEAR HIGH. Democrats control the House, Senate & @WhiteHouse. What in the world is Joe Biden doing?”  

Last Monday, he retweeted the post and added some new lines. “After the disastrous events in Afghanistan, we must confront a serious question: Is Joe Biden capable of discharging the duties of his office, or has the time come to exercise the provisions of the 25th Amendment?”

What is the 25th Amendment?

The 25th Amendment allows for government officials to strip the sitting president of his duties. The Vice President and the majority of cabinet officials can tell Congress they have no faith in the president’s abilities to lead. Then, they will report if he “is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office.” 

In particular, the 25th amendment often applies to cases of medical emergencies. In addition, the amendment also clarifies the ascension of the vice president to the leader if the president dies, resigns, or gets removed from office. It also establishes how to fill the vacancy for the vice president. 

Fall Of Afghanistan

The fall of the Afghan government was Scott’s trigger to call for a 25th Amendment intervention.  The US-backed government crumbled over the weekend as Taliban troops began capturing major cities.

Eventually, the capital Kabul and the presidential palace fell. Meanwhile, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani fled the country to safety, leaving citizens scrambling to leave as well.

This coincided with the evacuation of US troops and civilian workers trapped in the country. The Taliban sweep and the panicked evacuation all contributed to chaos at the Kabul airport. 

Meanwhile, Biden went on TV Monday to defend himself. He said he’s taking responsibility for the disastrous pullout. However, he also blamed former President Donald Trump for forcing his decision. He also blamed the Afghan military and government for not resisting the Taliban’s advances. 

‘I Inherited A Deal’

“When I came into office, I inherited a deal that President Trump negotiated with the Taliban. Under his agreement, U.S. forces would be out of Afghanistan by May 1, 2021 – just a little over three months after I took office. The choice I had to make as your president was to either follow through on that agreement or be prepared to go back to fighting the Taliban in the middle of the spring fighting season,” he explained. 

“There was no status quo of stability without American casualties after May 1. There was only the cold reality of either following through on the agreement to withdraw our forces or escalating the conflict and sending thousands more American troops back into combat in Afghanistan, lurching into the third decade of conflict,” he added. 

US Involvement in Afghanistan Ends Now

“Afghanistan political leaders gave up and fled the country. The Afghan military collapsed, some without trying to fight. If anything, the developments of the past week reinforce that ending US military involvement in Afghanistan now was the right decision.

American troops cannot and should not be fighting in a war, and dying in a war, that Afghan forces are not willing to fight for themselves,” Biden concluded.
