Republican Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida warned President Joe Biden on Wednesday, telling him to take a stand against the government of Cuba or else a “bloodbath” will take place in the island nation.

In a Twitter video, the senator urged Biden to lead the international community in pressuring the Cuban government to stop fighting protesters back.

In the video, Rubio said that he asked the government to use diplomacy. He asked them to convene the UN and the Organization of American States for an emergency session and discuss the abuses made by the Cuban regime. The senator also mentioned that he has urged them to pressure the international community to condemn and isolate the Cuban communist regime. Rubio then urged the government to be ready to take action and prevent a massacre.

The senator also noted that this event is happening in a place not far from home. It’s happening around 90 miles from the U.S.’ shores.

Rubio then warned that if action is not taken, a “horrific bloodbath” is what may take place.

Apart from the warning, Rubio also described how Cuba’s government managed to crack down on protesters. It has done so by shutting down the people’s electricity, stopping their access to the internet and mobile services. Additionally, it gave weapons to children, instructing them to attack protesters.

While this is happening, the community of Cuban-Americans in Florida now feels powerless since they couldn’t help.

Rubio then stated that the Cuba issue should be a bipartisan one. He mentioned that he would like to work with the current administration on the matter. However, he noted that its response has been “weak.”

The senator then claimed that the person in charge of Cuba policies at the State Department caused this weak response. The said person, Rubio said, has a history of backing engagement and of trying to get close to the regime in Cuba. Some of the things he did that show this include planning trips for Congress members to meet people in the Cuban government.

The country won’t be able to make a strong response from the president if a person like this handles Cuba policy, according to Rubio. He added that this “needs to change.”
