Senate Hearing Targets Alt-Left Terror Groups

Sen. Ted Cruz is convening a Senate hearing to investigate extremist groups’ roles in violence sweeping across U.S. cities.

Cruz will chair the Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on the Constitution on Tuesday to investigate ANTIFA and other Alt-Left radical groups. Speakers will include Acting Deputy Homeland Security Secretary Ken Cuccinelli, journalist Andy Ngo – whom ANTIFA assaulted by while covering one of their rallies – and law professor Johnathan Turley. Cruz says these radical left groups are waging “organized terror attacks” against the country to tear down government institutions.

Over the past few months, reports from across the country have noted the presence of Alt-Left radical groups. These reports say the groups stir up violence and unrest at police brutality protests. Many believe groups like ANTIFA have played prominent roles in much of the recent turmoil. Democrats have primarily blamed police and federal law enforcement for the instances of violence. However, GOP officials are more concerned with the role of the left-wing radical groups. President Trump announced in May that the U.S. would designate ANTIFA as a terrorist group. However, the administration hasn’t taken official action as of yet.

Cruz commented on the situation in a recent interview with Fox News. “Across the country, we’re seeing horrific violence, we’re seeing our country torn apart,” he said. “Violent anarchists and Marxists are exploiting protests to transform them into riots and direct assaults on the lives and safety of their fellow Americans.”

“These violent riots are not spontaneous,” Cruz continues, “nor are they mere coincidences. Instead, the evidence suggests they are organized terror attacks designed to instill fear and tear down the fundamental institutions of government. This hearing is designed to understand who is driving the violence, who is driving the assaults, who is driving the murders, and what their objective is.”

In his opening statement, Cruz plans to play a video that highlights the peaceful protests organized under civil rights leaders of the past, such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and contrast them with the weaponized violence and intimidation favored by ANTIFA and similar groups.

Democrats have mostly avoided calling out ANTIFA for its role in the recent violence sweeping through cities. Also, the left-leaning mainstream media has also been hesitant to condemn the group. Instead, the left has mostly blamed Alt-Right groups for inciting unrest at recent protests. However, there has been little to no evidence to indicate any organized presence.

Arrests of ANTIFA Members

Meanwhile, there have been several significant arrests of ANTIFA members. Last month, federal authorities arrested seven ANTIFA terrorists for a variety of federal crimes relating to the Portland unrest. In June, the NYPD caught two New York City lawyers with suspected ties to ANTIFA who threw a molotov cocktail at a police cruiser. Witness accounts indicated that the pair was also distributing firebombs to protesters. They also reportedly encouraged them to throw the bombs at police.

It’s mostly unclear who is behind the violence, but extremist agitators’ role cannot be overlooked. The Alt-Right is the mainstream media’s favorite boogeyman. However, this collection of rag-tag groups doesn’t amount to much more than a few fringe elements of antiquated bigots with minimal influence on urban populations.

It seems a highly organized, Marxist element exists behind much of the violence sweeping through U.S. cities at the moment. The threat from radical left groups seems much more significant, especially because of the mainstream media and the Democratic party’s unwillingness to condemn or pursue an investigation.

Cruz’s hearing is a step in the right direction. Any group that attempts to circumvent democratic processes through violence and intimidation constitutes a significant threat to the American way. Despite the danger to our democracy, the media and Democrats have been uncharacteristically mum on the topic. Cruz and other GOP lawmakers should use every tool at their disposal to investigate these groups because the Left has made it abundantly clear that they’re unwilling to pursue the issue.
