A recent straw poll shows that Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida slightly edges former President Donald Trump in terms of approval for a 2024 presidential run.

Centennial Institute conducted a survey at the Western Conservative Summit that took place in Denver last Saturday. In the survey, respondents asked to choose the potential candidates that they would approve of as president in 2024. DeSantis won over former president Trump in the survey by less than 3%.

The survey results ranked the following people as the top five:

Gov. Ron DeSantis – 74.12%
Donald Trump – 71.43%
Sen. Ted Cruz – 42.86%
Mike Pompeo – 39.35%
Sen. Tim Scott – 35.58%

The survey also asked the participants about their top issues. The following are the top three:

Immigration/border security – 82%
Election integrity – 79%
Religious freedom – 75%

The new survey comes as DeSantis has initiated the deployment of state and local law enforcement agents to help mitigate the ongoing immigration crisis at the southern border.

The Florida governor’s decision serves as the answer to Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey’s request for aid given the influx of immigration that resulted from the Biden administration’s change in immigration policy.
