Women Registering For The Draft Is Rediculous
- Two U.S. military service chief generals have testified that they now believe women should be required to register for the draft.
- Women were ineligible due to their combat restrictions, but now that women’s role in the military has been expanded to combat a few generals think the law should be changed.
- Only Congress can change the law requiring women to register for draft.
(CNN) Two of the U.S. military service chiefs believe women should now be required to register for the draft after the Defense Department opened up all combat jobs to women.
Marine Corps Commandant Gen. Robert Neller and Army Chief of Staff Gen. Mark Milley agreed that the current policy, which requires only males register for the Selective Service System, should be changed after restrictions that barred women from trying out for combat jobs were lifted last year.
“Every American who’s physically qualified should register for the draft,” said Neller at a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing Tuesday that examined the new policy to admit women into combat units.
“I think that all eligible and qualified men and women should register for the draft,” Milley added.
Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus and Army Acting Secretary Patrick Murphy, also testifying at the hearing. would not go as far but did say they believed the issue should be put to a national debate.
“This needs to be looked at as part of a national debate, given the changed circumstances,” said Mabus.
The Supreme Court in 1981 upheld Congress’ decision to exempt women from registering for the draft on the basis that since women were restricted from combat they would not be needed in the event of a draft.
“The existence of combat restrictions clearly indicates the basis for Congress’ decision to exempt women from registration,” Justice William Rehnquist wrote.
Congress would have to change the law in order for women to be drafted to the military.
Murphy said he encourages “the legislative body to look at” the issue.

Ever Argue with a woman? They will remember shit you didn’t even think they would. They want to be treated equally, this is part of the deal. Right or wrong its equal treatment for all.
I don’t remember the actual numbers, but I do recall it took over 100 non-combat troops to support 1 infantryman in the field… The women do not need to be in a combat job, to do their duty.. It’s a matter of fairness, if the males must register, the females should, just to keep the playing field level for things like student aid and such, which, as the laws are now, a man can not get without registering for selective service, but women can… lets finally be fair to the men, here.
We are the only country that doesn’t have women in their draft. Women should have to be called to do their duty the same as a man. If America needs to start the draft again inorder to protect our country then all Americans, Men and Women should be called upon to get the job done. The men should not be the only ones being called upon to give their lives especially since it has already been proven that our women are completely capable of doing the same job in combat situations as do the men. If you don’t want them in the infantry than draft them as drivers, mechanics, medical personnel, ect.
My guess is that the generals think women in combat is a bad idea and are just trying to press the point the only way they can politically.
Not all women can handle being in the military this would be a disaster for our country.
Not all MEN can handle the military either… why should women be any different??
If they can take any combat job they should have to register for the draft. If they are really equal they have to register. ( asked my wife, she agrees
Women in combat is a terrible idea, they have not the temperament or the physical strength for it, will jeopardize their fellow soldiers. The draft is OK if women can be utilized in non-war zone locations for support work for our forces. What we don;t need is both genders with PTSD from combat experiences or rape, assault etc. Women as care-givers to their damaged dads, brothers, husbands, sig,others are essential to recovery efforts
This has nothing to do with women in combat.. it has to do with them registering for selective service… there has not been a drawing for over 40 years… but if their name is drawn, they have many non-combat jobs available to them.. They fought for the ‘rights’ to have every job in the military, it’s time they step up to the responsibility to register for the selective service.
I have no doubts that there would be a way for them to opt-out of combat duty… if not then I’d be fighting for that as much as I’m fighting for them to have to register
“rediculous”? I’m not sure what that word means. However, if the headline meant to say “ridiculous”, I disagree with that sentiment. What’s good for the goose is good for the gander. Either they’re equal or they aren’t.
Women have been wanting to join, and I”m all for that. As a career soldier there were SOME women I would have loved to had fighting beside me. There are also many men i would not have wanted beside me in the field. But that has nothing to do with the Selective Service.
BUT to equalize the playing field at home they should be required to register just as the men. A man can not get financial aid for school, even, unless he’s registered with Selective Service, he’s liable to be arrested if he fails to register (usually if it’s found out during an ongoing criminal investigation, though). But he’s technically in violation by not registering. We haven’t drafted anyone since 73 (I was in Basic with the last of the Draftees). But if the men are required to register, the women should also. IF a draft is ever called they will be put in a job based on the ‘needs of the service’ . I doubt that they would just put a woman into a combat arms field unless they qualified physically, and I’d not doubt there would be a way to get out of that assignment into a non-combat field if they wanted.
I agree with the Generals, since the rules have changed and women are allowed in combat they should also be drafted along with our Boys!
Women have access to jobs in the military they previously were banned from. If all jobs are open then they should register with the draft like the rest of us.
they want to be treated equal, these young girls love hillary and want her in the WH, then i say all is fair in love&war. THEN REGISTER. and suffer the same as the male gender.
Equal opportunity to die for government.
Demographics are driving this turn. There are too few young people to throw at the cannons. Remember, the WW2 armies that ravaged Europe averaged just 18 years of age. The soldiers were children in grown bodies, child armies no different from those today in Africa.
If government actually were “of, by and for” the people, if it actually helped people thrive, would it need force and threats of violence to achieve relevance and align people to common goals?
I have known many women in the military that have put many men to shame when carrying out their duties. I am a recently retired Army Infantry Paratrooper with four years of combat duty in Afghanistan. I have also trained every branch of the military including Guard and Reserves, and NATO, Coalition, and Afghan forces.
It’s time we have EVERYONE register, and allow EVERYONE the opportunity to be called up to serve….no exception.
Women fought hard for equal rights now let them be equal sign up for the draft. equal rights means equal draft and equal death but women are the mother of man kind that is why I DISAGREE
We have able bodied men to do our fighting America…would have a standing army if we had a different president this one has decreased the amount of enlisted men and fired officers for no reason…hopefully the new president will rebuild the armed forces. God save America…
This is not a “politically correct” situation, it’s an equal rights situation that the women themselves asked and fought for. So why not?
Even though there should not be a draft, since there is and women want to play grown men games, then equal is equal.
It’s about time, the only reasons they were excluded in the first place were they have babies and therefore could keep producing males for the future wars.
If Women want equality and men have to register for the draft, then Women should have to register for the draft.
Women were exempted from the draft because they couldn’t serve in combat roles. That ban has been lifted so it is only logical that they register for the draft.

Women do not belong to the front line
Women have been fighting for total equality with men for some time. They accuse men of having some sort of war against them. I say it is about time we men give them what they want. Total and equal equality. I am tired of the war on men.
They are too weak physically to withstand the rigors of training, much less the rigors of battle.
since women want equality they should share in the burden of fighting for their equality.
Since women are entitled to equal rights they should be required to register for the draft just as men.
