Three Cops Shot During Delaware Standoff and Residents Shows Disrespect by Shouting Profanities
Three police officers from Wilmington, Delaware were shot while responding to a call made on Wednesday evening. Meanwhile, other officials instructed residents of the area to shelter in place.
The Wilmington Police Department released a statement, saying that people located in the area right between 23rd and 27th Steet, as well as from West Street to Carter Street should shelter in place and wait for the police to make further instructions.
An activist in the area stated that he believed a divide between the police and the community contributed to the shooting. He also mentioned that he saw residents swearing at law enforcement officers while they carried their fellow officers from the scene.
As per a WCAU-TV report, the gunman – who remains unidentified as of this writing – opened fire on the police. It happened during an hours-long standoff that extended into the early hours of Thursday.
Standoff in Wilmington Lasted Hours
The police were at King Plaza Apartments responding to a call when the suspect inside a nearby apartment complex opened fire on officers.
Three officers suffered injuries during the standoff. They have been transported to nearby hospitals to be attended to. According to officials, the said officers are now in stable condition.
According to a resident, she heard around 10 to 15 shots on Wednesday night. She went outside and discovered an officer carrying his fellow officer.
At one point, some first responders have been spotted using a fire truck ladder. They used it to go inside the complex through the window. After that, a woman and a child have been seen exiting the said window. They were also seen using the ladder to come down.
On Thursday, according to the Delaware News Journal, Wilmington activist, Rev. Derrick Johnson said that he thinks mistrust in law enforcement contributed to the incident.
The investigation is currently ongoing, and officials haven’t announced any suspects or arrests related to the shooting.
