Tampa Bay Buccaneer quarterback Tom Brady finally allowed himself to visit the White House. This time it’s in celebration of the Bucs’ winning the Super Bowl LV. Then, Brady decided he wanted to do more, so he got into some jokes with President Joe Biden at the expense of former President Donald Trump.

Tom Brady Jokes About ‘Sleepy Tom’ and ‘40%’

In front of  Biden, Brady made a joke that teammates once called him “Sleepy Tom” when he lost track of a down during an offensive drive. The quarterback was referencing Trump’s nickname for Trump during the 2020 campaign, “Sleepy Joe”.

Brady also took shots at Trump and his supporters who still insist that Democrats stole the elections. The NFL legend joked that when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers won Super Bowl LV, only about 40% of viewers really believed that Tampa won the championship.

“Not a lot of people think that we could have won, In fact, I think about 40% of people still don’t think we won. You understand that Mr. President?” Brady asked. Biden replied, “I understand that.”.

MAGA Hat Controversy

Back when Brady played for New England, Brady sparked outrage from casual fans for displaying a “Make America Great Again” hat in his locker. The Daily Wire reported: “During an interview in 2015, a Make America Great Again (MAGA) hat was spotted in then-Patriots quarterback Tom Brady’s locker.

This sparked a flurry of desperately angry tweets and responses from Hollywood, and all of those on the Left, shaking with disbelief.”

During those years, Brady did not deny his closeness with Trump. He did, however, took pains to avoid political questions. “Can I just stay out of this debate? Donald is a good friend of mine. I have known him for a long time. I support all my friends,” he said at the time. “Even though Brady has clarified to Leftist and sports media alike that he had the hat because of a friendship with the President of the United States — not necessarily because of his ideological leanings — they all came out swinging,” The Daily Wire noted.

White House Visit No Shows

The controversy about his friendship with Trump led to Brady not attending the Patriots' visit to the White House in 2017. At least two dozen players refused to show up to the event. Brady himself said he could not attend because of family matters.

However, Patriots spokesman Stacey James pointed out that “34 players had attended, similar to the turnout when President George W. Bush hosted them in 2004 and 2005”. In 2018, Trump canceled an invitation to the Philadelphia Eagles to the White House following their Super Bowl win.

“President Trump has disinvited the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles from their planned visit Tuesday to the White House. The invitation was canceled over what Trump says is a disagreement on standing during the national anthem,” reported CBS News.
