Voters are impressed with Trump’s commitment to his campaign promises. The poll shows that 69% describe him as tough, 63% as energetic, 60% as focused, and 58% as effective. His firm stance on immigration has garnered significant approval. About 59% of Americans support his program to deport illegal immigrants, and 64% back his decision to send U.S. troops to the U.S.-Mexico border.
Another key area where Trump earns high marks is foreign policy. His handling of the Israel-Hamas conflict received a 54% approval rating, reflecting his firm approach to international issues. However, Americans are less convinced about his proposal for the U.S. to take over Gaza post-conflict, with only 13% in favor of his plan.
Challenges on the Economic Front
Despite strong overall support, the president’s economic policies are drawing mixed reactions. According to the poll, a significant 66% of respondents feel Trump hasn’t done enough to lower prices, indicating that inflation remains a major concern. Only 31% believe he’s focused on inflation the “right amount,” while 3% think he’s focused too much on it—a key factor influencing his approval rating.
Tariffs are another area of divided opinion. While 56% approve of Trump’s tariffs on China, support decreases when it comes to other countries. Just 44% approve of tariffs on Mexico, 40% on Europe, and 38% on Canada. These responses suggest that while Americans support strong trade measures against China, they are wary of broader trade conflicts, which could impact his approval rating moving forward.
Comparing President Trump’s Approval Ratings During His First and Second Term
Trump’s latest approval rating marked a significant improvement from his first term. In January 2017, Gallup reported his approval at just 44%, the lowest for any incoming president in 70 years. This time, however, the President enjoyed a 53% approval rating and put his score closer to presidents who enjoyed post-election “honeymoon” periods. For comparison, Joe Biden began his term with a 57% approval rating, Barack Obama with 66%, and George W. Bush with 59%.
However, it remains to be seen if Trump can maintain this positive trajectory. Historically, approval ratings tend to dip as the realities of governance set in. The CBS/YouGov poll indicates that while Trump enjoys strong support now, Americans are watching closely to see how he handles pressing issues like inflation and international conflicts—both of which could significantly influence his approval rating in the coming months.
Trump’s Approval Rating: Public Perception and Influence
The poll also highlights public sentiment on government efficiency and private sector influence. Half of Americans believe Elon Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency should have “a lot” or “some” influence over government spending. Among Republicans, this figure rises to 74%, suggesting growing trust in private sector leaders to streamline government operations—a factor that could indirectly affect Trump’s approval rating depending on policy outcomes.
Trump’s current approval rating paints a complex picture. While many Americans are satisfied with his performance and commitment to campaign promises, significant challenges remain—particularly regarding inflation and international policies. As his second term progresses, whether he can address these concerns effectively will determine if his approval rating continues to rise or starts to decline.
