Trump Orders Flags on Federal Buildings to Fly at Half-Staff in Memory of Coronavirus Fatalities

President Trump released an order for federal buildings to lower all their flags to half-staff for three days. This aims to honor the memory of Americans killed by the novel coronavirus.

Fox News explains that the U.S. flag flies at half-staff on federal buildings when the whole country is in mourning. “Typically, in observance of Memorial Day the flag is to fly at half-staff from sunrise until noon and then is raised to full height from noon until sunset,” said the report.

“I will be lowering the flags on all Federal Buildings and National Monuments to half-staff over the next three days in memory of the Americans we have lost to the coronavirus,” Trump said in a tweet.

“On Monday, the flags will be at half-staff in honor of the men and women in our Military who have made the Ultimate Sacrifice for our Nation,” he then added.

President Dwight Eisenhower issued a proclamation to standardize such orders. He streamlined the dates and times for this directive on flags and federal buildings back in 1954.

“Our Nation mourns for every life lost to the coronavirus pandemic,” President Trump wrote in a proclamation ordering the observance. “We share in the suffering of all those who endured pain and illness from the outbreak,” he then added.  “Through our grief, America stands steadfast and united against the invisible enemy. May God be with the victims of this pandemic and bring aid and comfort to their families and friends.”
