Trump Requested to Testify Under Oath at Senate Trial
On Thursday, Rep. Jaime Raskin (D-Md.), the lead Democratic impeachment manager, asked for former President Donald Trump to testify under oath during the impeachment trial, which is scheduled for next week.
While the former president does not have to appear, the head impeachment manager requested this as they prepare for the trial. The impeachment trial will see if Trump actually caused the people to mob the U.S. Capitol last Jan. 6.
In a letter addressed to Trump, the representative said he is inviting the former president to testify under oath, “In light of your disputing these factual allegations.”
The representative also asked Trump to respond by Friday afternoon.
Trump Being Requested to Testify Under Oath A Publicity Stunt?
In an interview with NBC News, Bruce Castor, one of trump’s legal team for the impeachment, said that the former president will not testify. He dubbed Raskin’s move as a “publicity stunt” so that it can make up for the weak case of the House.
In reply to Raskin, another one of Trump’s lawyers, David Schoen, also called the impeachment manager’s letter a publicity stunt. He also criticized the upcoming trial and called it an “unconstitutional proceeding.”
Loyal Trump ally Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C) said that Raskin asking for Trump to testify was “a political ploy” by the Democratic party. He added that it is unlikely for Trump to testify.
Earlier this week, Trump’s lawyers filed briefs, saying that the trial was unconstitutional. They also urged for the Senate to dismiss the case swiftly.
In January, the House decided to impeach the former president. In his second impeachment, Trump was charged with “incitement of insurrection,” citing his alleged role in the mobbing of the U.S. Capitol by his supporters.
The House, which is controlled by the Democrats, approved the article of impeachment with a 232-197 vote. In the vote, 10 Republicans decided to side with the Democrats on approving the article.
