Trump Sets New Mission for Coronavirus Task Force

President Trump is keeping the White House coronavirus task force in place. However, he’s setting new objectives for the group now that the pandemic is beginning to cool down.

Earlier in the week, administration officials said the White House was considering phasing out the task force soon. Trump, however, changed his mind after the notion was met with criticism. On Wednesday, Trump told reporters that he was surprised by the public’s response. “I thought we could wind it down sooner,” he said. “I had no idea how popular the task force is until actually yesterday when I started talking about winding down.”

Trump decided to keep the task force but he is changing its priorities. The country is emerging from the crisis, so the White House is shifting its focus towards restoring the nation’s battered economy. Rather than phase out the task force, the president gave them new orders. The task force new will now focus on two primary objectives: reopening the economy and developing a vaccine. The group will still coordinate with state governments on reopening closed businesses and easing lockdown restrictions.

Praising Outbreak Response

Combatting a national pandemic isn’t easy, but many reports indicate that the task force rose to the challenge admirably. On Wednesday, the president released a series of tweets praising the group’s response to the outbreak. “The White House CoronaVirus Task Force, headed by Vice President Mike Pence, has done a fantastic job of bringing together vast highly complex resources that have set a high standard for others to follow in the future.” he wrote. The task force has received also received bipartisan praise from state governors.

Pence has been running the White House coronavirus task force since it was formed, and most reports indicate that the vice president has done an excellent job. The task force’s top medical advisors include White House Coronavirus Task Force Coordinator Dr. Deborah Birx and Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease Dr. Anthony Fauci. The public seems to have a high opinion of Dr. Birx and Dr. Fauci, and many found the pair to be a calming presence at the administration’s daily coronavirus briefings.

COVID-19 and the U.S.

There have been over 1.2 million confirmed COVID-19 cases in the U.S. and over 70,000 deaths, but drastic government intervention has substantially slowed the curve. The White House wants to begin reopening the economy but, as usual, Democrats have decided to make it a political issue.

Left-wing lawmakers mostly oppose the reopening the economy, but that’s all part of their long-term agenda. Unfortunately, it seems like the Democrats want to keep the economy closed as long as possible for political reasons. The country’s economic growth is a sticking point for the Trump campaign. So, Democrats believe economic disaster will help their cause at the ballot box in November. They’re more concerned with beating Trump than the Americans who will lose their businesses and jobs as a result of a prolonged shutdown. Unsurprisingly, the mainstream media has been more than happy to accommodate the left’s narrative and stoke public fear. However, the public is beginning to get fed up, and protests against the arguably unconstitutional lockdown orders are becoming more common. Hopefully, the people who lost their livelihoods will take out their frustrations on the pro-lockdown politicians at the ballot box in November.
